Trip to Bangalore Part 1: Microlight flying

This weekend I flew down to Bangalore to fly a Microlight plane and celebrate Vinit’s birthday (but that’s another post). It was an awesome trip and I had a lot of fun.

On Friday I left the office at about 1 am and my flight was at 6:45am and I had to get there by latest 5:45 which meant that I had to leave home at 5am as the airport is about 45 mins from my place (depending on traffic). Obviously I hadn’t packed the night before so I had to get up at 4 to pack which meant I had about 2 1/2 hours of sleep. I flew Kingfisher so the flight was comfortable and the food was decent. I got there at 9:30 am and Surabhi and Vinit picked me up from the airport and we went straight to the airport for the flying lessons.

Vinit, Surabhi, Vinitha (The pilot) and me with our plane

Surabhi and Vinit had both already done one session of 1/2 hour each before I got there. When I first went up the weather had cleared so the instructor let us stay up there for an hour instead of 1/2 hour as initially planned. The visibility was very good and although the air was a bit turbulent it was good weather to fly.

The plane we were flying can stay up for ~3-4 hours and go to a max height of 10,000 feet. We only went up to 1,500 feet though and were traveling at 80 – 90 km/hr for the most part. The plane is very light as you can see in the photo below where the pilot (Vinitha) is pushing it out of the hanger to prepare for launch.

Vinitha pushing the plane out of the hanger to prepare for flying

I got to control the plane for a while and learnt how to turn the plane, go up/down etc. The control stick was super sensitive and most of the time we were moving the stick a couple of mm’s to control the direction. I even did 2 takeoff’s and one landing. The controls were very basic and minimalistic (see photo below)

After the hour of flying we went back to vinit’s place and I crashed for a few hours. Then we drove back to the airport for another round of flying. My flight was the last flight of the day as no flying is allowed after the sun sets. I got to see the sun set from an altitude of ~1000 ft. It was an amazing view. The best part was that this time we took out the doors of the plane (which were made of pexi-glass anyways) and so we were at ~1,000 – 1,500 feet with no door between me and a free fall back to earth. Then we did a couple of sharp turns and believe me when you are up there at a 60 degree angle looking at the earth below through an open door it gives you a thrill like few other things can. The view of Bangalore from up there was superb as you can see from the pic below.

We finished our flying sessions with a last round of flying the next day. I was a bit worried that we would have to postpone the flight as it was raining earlier but by the time we got to the airport it had stopped. This time we flew through and above clouds which was also fun. Though I prefer to fly with a high visibility as its a lot more fun.

I have about a gig of photos from the trip and I am in the process of sorting through them so expect to see some more pics in the photogallery sometime over the weekend.

This is all for now. Will post more later.

Hard drive death.

Three days ago one of my hard-drives decided it was time to stop working. The irony of the situation is that I was in the middle of backing up data off that drive when it stopped working. I was happily copying data from the disk to another system when I noticed that a couple of files weren’t copied because of read errors. At first I let the copy continue, then I thought let me run a disk check on the drive first and then I can copy data off. Bad Move.

Once I unmounted the drive none of the tools would recognize it and I couldn’t access any of the data on it anymore. I tried to make a disk image of the drive but even after letting the process run for 2 days it had only imaged 16 MB (The drive was 80 GB) so I cancelled it. If I had let the copy process run I guess I could have copied most of the data off it before it failed.

Now I can’t even get the system to identify the drive. I have a backup of most of the data so its not critical that I get access to the drive but its a good learning experience. So I am going to try freezing the drive and see if that will let me get the data off.

I will document my attempts and will share it over here over the next few days.

New Gadgets/Stuff I bought

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 1:55 AM

This past month I have been purchasing a lot of new stuff and I am really happy with my purchases. The first major thing I bought is a new Phone, I am now the proud owner of a Nokia N95 8GB. I love the phone, it has a lot of cool features and there are a lot of applications that are available for it. Even the GPS is accurate and the built in maps also have Indian maps that are pretty accurate. I tried it while driving home from work and it showed my exact location on the map. The phone has a built in accelerometer that allows apps to get the orientation so after I installed a few apps it has most of the functionality of the iPhone (except the touch screen).

The second major purchase is a 1 Terabyte Harddrive (1024 GB). Now all my data is there on one drive that is mounted on my laptop using an external HardDisk enclosure.

Other than that I have finally bought a wireless router, mainly because Surabhi complained everytime she came over and because my phone has wireless and I wanted to play with it at home 😉

The last item was a fridge which just arrived today. I am really happy about this because the old one was ready to die.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Car trouble

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 1:52 AM

Yesterday night Vinit was driving back home at about 2 am when his car (a 1986 Maruti 800) decided to stop working about 10 mins drive from our place (Thats at the speed I drive). So me and Surabhi decided to go help him.

We took a rope from home and drove to where he was stalled. The problem was that the car would start but the accelerator wasn’t working so the car would stall after a few seconds. Anyways we looked at the engine but as all three of us are computer engg and not mechanical we couldn’t figure out what was wrong. So we used the rope to tie the two cars together and towed the car home.

The rope did break twice but we managed to get home. Believe me it was really boring driving at 10 kmph on a road that I usually go at 80-90 kmph. For me it was a really easy drive but Vinit was covered with sweat by the time we got home as he had to be careful that he didn’t hit my car if I suddenly braked.

Thankfully the distance wasn’t that far otherwise it would have taken a lot more time. As it was late at night there wasn’t any traffic to worry about either.

Felt bad for Vinit, as he had just come back from Jaipur and must have been exhausted.

This is all for now will post more later.

Rain Rain go away…

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 12:38 AM

The past few days it has been raining a lot over here. In-fact in the last week it had rained pretty much everyday. The rain it good but it brings assorted problems with it.

Last Tuesday night/Wednesday morning it was raining very heavily. I was at work till late and wanted to leave but because it was raining so hard, me and Shipra decided to wait for the rain to stop before we left. After almost 1 1/2 of waiting the rain stopped for a little while so we both ran out and got into our respective cars.

A minute later we found out that the left front tyre of her car was stuck in a ditch. Apparently the rain washed away a lot of the mud and the tyre sunk into the ground. Plus this hole was now filled with water so we couldn’t get any traction on the wheel. Spent almost half an hour trying to get the car out and ended up being covered in mud. (Good thing I was wearing brown pants). Finally managed to get it out on the last try. If that try hadn’t succeeded we would have left the car there and used my car to get home. Thankfully that wasn’t needed.

To top things off, Lots of power lines went down that night so there was no electricity at home and to make things even more fun there was a short in my house wiring (water got into an outlet) so the inverter also stopped working. Spent the night without power. Then in the morning when the power came back the door bell wouldn’t stop ringing. (yes, it was another stupid short). Finally figured out which fuse to trip to stop the stupid ringing. (I was half asleep and really cranky)

Its a pain to drive when its raining. Although its a lot of fun when you are sitting at home watching rain from indoors. But I guess its better than the heat.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

My bathroom is being demolished…

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 3:33 AM

Yeah, dad decided that the bathroom should have been on the other side of the room and the study also needed an attached bathroom. So two new bathrooms are being constructed and my poor bathroom is being demolished (sort of) to be converted to a servant quarter.

So right now I have been relocated to Surabhi’s room. 🙁 I miss my room. If you want I can post pictures of the mess my bathroom is in right now: the door was demolished and is going to be blocked, and a new door is being created at the other end of the bathroom. The nice shelves etc are also being demolished.

The study is in a worse shape. Over there pretty much the entire wall has been broken down. Right now they are in the process of digging up the floor to lay down the pipes etc for the sewage connection. So as soon as you enter the house it looks like a trench is being dug across the open space.

This is all for now. Will post more later.

Upgraded to 1mbps connection at home

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 3:25 AM

Upgraded my net connection at home to 1MBps unlimited connection. Now it feels like I am finally back on the information superhighway.

Love the new speed. Airtel also has an 8mbps connection but they have a bandwith quota on it. Which I know is a bad idea for me. The last time I had a quota based connection I had to pay almost Rs 40,000 in internet connection charges. (The connection was for Rs 250)

Well this is all for now. I am off to enjoy my new speedy downloads 🙂

Yet another delayed update

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 2:31 AM

Hi everyone! As usual I have gotten busy with real life and not updated the blog. So here’s a summary of what I have been doing since my last update:

1. Working: Spent a lot of time at work. One of the project’s deadlines got preponed and had to pitch in on the project. Spent some time working on data migration issues also. It was an interesting experience. Got home at 8 – 8:30 am a couple of times. But I enjoy working over here.

2. Reading: Read a couple of interesting books: “Reserved for the Cat” by Mercedes Lackey. Its the 6th book in the Elemental mage series and it was an ok read. I liked the other books in the series more. Also read the entire Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell. Really like this series. Am really waiting for the next book in the series to come out.

3. Rafting: Went for a rafting trip with Surabhi, Vinit and Ridhi. It was an amazing trip. We got to Rishikesh late in the afternoon and immediately left for rafting. Since there have to be atleast 7-8 people in a raft our group was paired with another group which had three girls in it. I enjoyed the trip a lot. We got to do; rafting, cliff jumping, rock climbing, rappelling, crossing the Burma bridge and kayaking. The water was freezing.

The second night we got hit with a sandstorm and then it started raining so the next day the water level was a lot higher and the rapids were even better. The guide we had was fun and made us play some really cool games. The one I enjoyed the most was where we had to stand up during a rapid and try not to fall.

Yes I took photos (Obviously) however my camera was low on battery (don’t ask) so we used Shivani’s camera also to take photos. We have some really nice pics on her camera so I am waiting to get those pics before I upload photos to the website. I should have them by next weekend. Till then, all you got to do is wait…

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Some random thoughts

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 4:34 AM

Its late and I realized that I haven’t been posting on the site, but don’t feel like typing a complete blog entry so this post is just going to be some random thoughts I have been thinking about:

There’s an application in Linux called ‘kBluelock’ that allows you to setup your computer to monitor a particular bluetooth device and if that device goes out of range it automatically locks your computer. I have it set to watch my phone so whenever I leave the desk it locks my computer automatically as I always carry my phone in my pocket.

Looking to buy a new phone, this one is giving me a lot of issues. Keeps dropping my calls in the middle. Any recomendations? I need something with a good camera and a GPS. It should allow me connect to an email server and the web.

Seriously want to buy an automatic door opener or something. Its a pain to get out of the car to open the main doors so that I can park the car inside.

Giving out free samples increases your sales. Word of mouth is the best marketing strategy. Tor publishing has been emailing free copies of some of their books every 2 weeks and I have already found two authors that I really like and will buy their books in the future. i.e. if the shipping charges don’t bankrupt me first.

Amazon shipping kills you, $5 shipping + $5 per item additional. So a $18 book ends up costing me $28. Not going to buy from them.

Skype is a cool software, getting Skypein to work is a pain for some reason. It even works on linux. Need to figure out how to merge skype chat logs from two computers. Copying everything to one folder doesn’t work

At 4 am the roads are completely empty so its fun to drive

Delhi heat sucks

* Debian Unstable/Testing don’t like my laptop. Stable works great. Need to roll back to Stable. Will end up formatting again. Will do it over the weekend. Don’t want to end up without a laptop during the week if something goes wrong. (Will post a complete list of issues later)

* My post on setting up the wireless card ended up on Debian-news site. 🙂
* Delhi mosquitoes suck… literally.
* need to organize a get together for school friends
* ebooks are great. esp the no shipping part.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Last week brought a lot of changes

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 12:10 AM

This past week have brought a lot of changes. I started the week with a new job. Thats right I just switched jobs. I am now working for a company called SourceFuse Technologies that’s based out of Noida and has offices in the US also. I have joined as a senior project manager for PHP.

The week started off pretty well, I got to work at 1pm (yeah, I still work US hours) and was back home at ~1:30 am. Wasn’t that bad. The next few days however were crazy we were here in the office till almost 5 am. On friday I got home at 6:30am. This was because we had a project deadline. Thankfully that is now deployed and confirmed as working.

The other major change was that I got a new laptop from work, its a Compaq presario v3000 with Dualcore processors (1.7 Ghz) and 2 GB of RAM, 160GB hdd. Its a great system. It had Vista installed on it and it was running really slowly. Plus I hate Vista anyways. BTW, do you know. The first time you start a computer running vista it takes it about 20mins-1 hour to configure the system? Saw this on a piece of paper that I found with my laptop in the bag.

I have installed Linux on it and it ran great except for the following issues:

1. Headphones weren’t working. When I plugged the headphones in the system sound was played on both the speakers and the headphones. – Fixed

2. Can’t get a resolution higher than 1024x – Still working on it. Had fixed it but that broke the touchpad. 🙁 Not really a major issue. Just irritating

3. Wireless not working – Fixed. Needed to install the drivers.

Other than that, everything worked out of the box. Including the bluetooth, builtin webcam, LAN etc.

Really enjoying playing with it. In the process of installing windows on it in a virtual machine. I will make a separate post on how I got everything to work.

This is all for now. Will post more later.
