Some random thoughts/comments/updates

Filed under: My Life,My Thoughts — Suramya @ 3:04 PM

* Watched a hailstorm from the safety of my room with my parents yesterday. It was awesome, some of the hailstones were almost 1/2 cm in diameter. I did have to go out once to move the car so that the hail didn’t mess up the paint. Got a couple of hits on my head during this for my trouble.

* Installed Linux on my desktop over hereas I needed a system where I could install/debug my scripts. Also resizing a lot of pics in Linux in easier than in Windows. In Linux all I need to do is run the following command and it resizes all the jpg files in the current directory to 1024 x whatever (It maintains the aspect ratio) mogrify -resize 1024x *.jpg. I haven’t found anything that does the same in windows yet and resizing pics manually is a pain.

* Also re-installed Windows on the same system. Its a lot less painful than what it used to be. However, some things to note:

  • My USB ports weren’t detected until I installed SP2 and then installed the drivers
  • The max resolution I was getting was 800×600 until I installed the VGA drivers
  • The USB not getting detected meant that my USB mouse didn’t work. Good thing I had a PS2 keyboard…

On the other hand Linux detected all my hardware without issues. I did use Kanotix.com’s Live linux CD to jump start the install process so it wasn’t really a completely fair test. Once I installed it to my harddisk for some reason it decided to not initialize my network card but it was a 2 min fix. Other than that I didn’t face any issues with the install. So if you want to play with Linux/Install Linux with a minimum of hassle then use Kanotix to install it. One of these days I am going to install Gentoo on my system just to try it out. Personally I love Debian (Kanotix is a Debian based system).

* Reading the Blood series (Also known as the Vicki Nelson series) by Tanya Huff. Its about Vampires/paranormal and how a particular ex-cop (Vicki) interacts with them. Pretty interesting. However the 4th book didn’t start off that well. I think the author is going to make the characters more emotional/whinny which would suck.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Eye now better :)

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 8:05 AM

My eye infection is now finally fixed. 🙂 Had to take some antibiotics and endure some hot water massages and sticky eye medicines but finally no more…

Now I can use my computer without eye irritation and I have a couple of projects I want to work on and complete. Won’t tell you what they are so if I decide not to do them no one will nag me 😉

More updates later.

Stupid eye infection

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:18 AM

Got a stupid eye infection in my left eye. Its nothing bad, the eye is just a bit swollen up and it itches like crazy. Mostly its very annoying. Washing it seems to stop the itching for a little while so I will be washing the eye every 15 mins till its healed.

Putting some really sticky eye medicine in the eye in the meantime but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything other than make it hard for me to see…

Well this is all for now. I guess I should goto sleep early today. 🙁

I am back

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:18 AM

I am back… This break from writing the blog was a bit longer than what I had intended initially but I think it was required. So here’s what I have been upto this past month:

1. Attended weddings/receptions. I attended a lot of those, and it was a bit of a shock to see so many of your classmates tying the knot. Now in a couple of months one of my friends will be a mom. Man I feel old.

2. Went to a trip to Rajasthan to attend a housewarming in Chappar. Three days of doing nothing but relaxing with no phones/computers. Just what the doctor ordered.

3. In the process of updating photos.suramya.com to use the Yahoo User Interfaces. The beta version is ready. Will be putting it live sometime over the weekend.

4. Categorized Surabhi’s wedding photos. There were over 2k photos. In the process of posting them to the website (No, not all of them 😉 ). They will go live with the new photogallery over the weekend.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Surabhi’s married!!

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 2:17 PM

My little sister got married on the 23rd. Still haven’t gotten used to it. Going to her reception in another 3 hours. So will be busy there…

Took lots of pics. Actually I didn’t take a lot of pics, my cousin Axu, Ashosk Bhaiya and Ganesh Phufaji took most of the pics cause I was busy with stuff most of the time. Reema, Jessica, Paula, Sophia and Renny also took a lot of pics. Just to give you an idea of the amount of pics, we have over 850 pics just from Paula and Reema’s camera’s. This is seperate from the 4 GB of video files I have sitting on the system.

So once I get back from the reception I will sort through the pics and will post the best online.

Once all the crazyness passes i will resume blogging on a semi regular basis.

Lifes a bit busy to blog about

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 1:11 AM

Life is a bit busy right now so no time to blog about it:

1. Moved out of my apartment in the US, dumped everything in storage. will be moving into a new one when I get back.

2. Flew to India for my sisters wedding.
3. Currently busy with the wedding preparations, distributing cards etc.
4. Net connection is only active in one room till I get the wireless router working (Need to find a power supply for it)
5. Friends wedding also coming up so need to attend that.

Plus assorted stuff that needs to be taken care of before the wedding. Also have to figure out who is arriving when so that someone can go receive them.

Over all its fun. Tiring but fun. Will post more when I get some time.

Happy New Year

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 9:11 PM

Wishing You all a Happy New Year. Hope you had a great new years Party and may all your wishes come true in the days to come.

We went to Madhur, Naresh and Sam’s place for new years. A lot of people were there, we spent a couple of hours dancing, followed by another couple of hours of playing dumb charades. Our team won by a big margin in the first game. It got so bad that we were guessing the name of movie within seconds so we reshuffled the teams then the game was a lot of fun. But by that time everyone was dead tired (This was around 5:30 am).

Pics will be coming soon. Once I get the powersupply replaced on my system. It has the editing software I use to ‘fix’ the photos (Clean them up, remove red eyes etc). Worse comes to worse I will install it on my laptop and use it on it. However my laptop harddrive is dying so want to wait for the new disk before I install more junk on it.

Lets see… Will keep you posted.

Thoughts after watching Happy Feet and reading its reviews

Filed under: My Life,My Thoughts — Suramya @ 11:51 PM

First of I want to wish all the visitors to this blog a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Now on to my rambling…

On the 14th we had our office Christmas party. We hired a limo and went to watch a movie in it followed by dinner in the city. It was a lot of fun. Originally the plan was to watch “Deck The Halls” but thankfully there was a mix-up at the theater so we got to watch Happy Feet instead. That movie was so much better than Deck the hall; It was a fun lighthearted movie with a great sound track. though it did raise some really good issues about the environment.

I was looking at the reviews and lot of people didn’t like the movie and think its “Satanic”, “promotes hate” and a lot of other crap like that. One of the posters on the IMDB forums said

Hello, my name is Martha, a mother of 3. I took my three little puddleducks to see this movie and was shocked, SHOCKED by it. It is clearly the work of the devil! Penguins DANCING?!?!?! AND SINGING?!??!?! It is satanic and promotes devil worship. My children were so upset by its anti chriatian views, i took them right out of the cinema and slapped the manager.

For those who allow such filth to be shown on our screens… SHAME ON YOU!

I almost fell of my chair laughing when I read this. Is this person for real? Listen Martha, movies do take a lot of liberties with reality. Thats how you can have Alien invasions (Aliens, Independence Day), talking fish (Finding Nemo, Little Mermaid), talking pigs (Babe), Ghosts (Ghostbusters) in them. If you actually think that fish and animals do talk then you need to get your head checked. What I really want to know is how do dancing penguins relate to devil worship. I watched this movie with 7 kids and 10 adults and we had Muslims, Christians and Hindu’s in our group not one of them thought that this movie was about “Devil worshiping”. It does raise some interesting questions about environmental issues but in no way shape or form is it about devil worship, against religion or any such nonsense. Its a good fun movie.

Oh, guess what it gets better. There was this other guy who wanted everyone to boycott this movie because “there were no blacks in it”. Yes, I am serious thats what he said. Here’s the actual quote

I was disturbed to find there were no black ppl in this movie. In a time where black and white relations are shaky I found it disgusting that there were no afro americans in this film. I believe the director must have some obvious relationship with Michael Richards, as he clearly showed that he has feelings of hate towards “the black man.” I have now decided to boycott all of this directors future films, and i urge u all to do the same. Your thoughts and opinions are welcome.

God! People, get a life and some self respect. Do you have so little self respect that if an animated movie doesn’t have a “black man” in it then you feel threatened and feel that it must be because others hate you? I didn’t see Indian’s, Chinese, Egyptians, Russians and a people from a hundred other countries in the movie and I don’t hear them complaining about it.

Yes, your ancestors were enslaved and put through crap and believe me I feel bad for them. The slavers were wrong and they shouldn’t have done what they did. But thats done now and we can’t change it. Stop using it as an excuse.

These people complain that “white” people are racist but I think that they are the biggest racists of them all. Anyone not black is one of them is out to oppress the poor “black man”. I knew people like that, they didn’t know jack about the work they were supposed to be doing but when some one who did got promoted or got a raise they would complain that it was because the administration was racist and they didn’t want a ‘black’ person heading the department. Arghh! It really gets me mad.

Oh and if you feel the sudden urge to send me flame mails after reading this, don’t bother as I will either delete them or post them here and make fun of them. I am confident enough in myself that I can ignore the random idiots.

Just for the record I make friends with a person based on how interesting they are, not what race/caste/religion/whatever they are. If I find you interesting I will talk to you but if not, I will either ignore you or tolerate you as I do for lot of other unwanted things in life.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

My Birthday celebrations

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:59 PM

As some of you already know my birthday was on the 3rd of Dec and this time I had a lot of fun celebrating it. Since Aarti’s birthday is on the 2nd we decided to have a joint party on the 2nd evening so that we could celebrate her birthday on the 2nd and the celebrate my birthday at midnight.

We (Reema, Pranav, Sarang and me) arrived there at Aarti’s place at about 8:15 pm and we were one of the first to arrive, we were soon followed by Amit and Anu, so they decided to pass the time by playing Uno (I was busy eating…as I was starving). Then we remembered that Amit and Anu had gotten cake so Aarti cut it. It was a really good cake (I think it was called the banana split cake or something like that…) Below is a pic of Aarti cutting the cake:

After the rest of the group joined us slowly we started the party with food, followed with shots:

then dancing. (A lot of dancing… We started at about 9 pm and went on till almost 3 am or maybe a bit later… not to clear on that part) Below are some photos taken at that time.

At 12 am both me and Aarti cut another cake this time to celebrate my birthday. The cake cutting was followed by a lot more dancing, singing and basically us enjoying ourselves.

Once most of us got tired we decided to leave and got home at around 4:30 am or so at which time we all went to sleep. Got up at 11 am and got ready as we had planned to go for lunch in the city. Because everyone had a late night we decided to postpone the lunch till 2 pm, but by the time we got seated and everyone ordered it was already 3 pm. We went to this mexican restaurant called La Palapa located in the east village. We were seated in this heated room with a glass ceiling. The food was awesome and the service was great.

After lunch we went to this desert place but since all of us had already eaten so much only Vinit and Surabhi ordered anything (They both got hot chocolate). Then we came home where we relaxed and watched a bit of TV (Saw the first two episodes of Sliders).

As usual I took a lot of photos (143 on my camera, plus photos on Aarti’s and Madhur’s camera’s) and will be sharing them soon. Actually Aatri posted the photos from her camera online, you can check them out over here

This birthday was a lot of fun so a big thank you to all my friends who showed up and even bigger thanks to everyone who called/emailed/messaged me to wish me.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.
