Visiting relatives

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:05 PM

Went for a visit to my relatives on Monday morning and it was a lot of fun. We (Me and mom) left home at 6 am and drove to Basera. The problem was that we just had an engine overall done on our car so we weren’t supposed to drive at more than 50 kph. Believe me, driving at that speed was annoying. We got there at almost 1 pm. (This included a 20 min halt for breakfast). Once we got there we picked up my nephew (Shaurya) from school as it was on the way.

Once we got home we had lunch and talked for a while after which mom showed everyone Surabhi’s wedding photos while I played with Shaurya and Lakshya. Once the sun went down me and Ashok bhaiya went for a drive where I saw the damage that was caused by the recent hailstorm. This was the worst hailstorm in living memory (as per my grandfather). Hail whose size ranged from golf balls to baseballs completely destroyed crops. There was a 100% destruction of crops in most villages. The hail killed a lot of animals and I heard unconfirmed reports that 4 men died because of it.

The evening/late night was spent talking. On the next day Shaurya woke me up pretty early and that was annoying but once I was up it wasn’t that bad. We spent the day playing catch and tagging along with Ashok Bhaiya as he went along with his work.

On the way back we stopped at Goon for a couple of hours and I had a great time over there also with Shipra, Chavi and Badal. We looked at the photos again (I am getting tired of looking at them…) and talked. Actually Rajkumar mama and mom talked while I listened. We left from there and stopped for a glass of Fresh lime soda which was awesome. I love that shop, I have been their customer ever since I can remember and hardly any visits to Basera go by without me stopping at their place.

Over all it was a fun trip and I came back very relaxed even though my back hurts from Shaurya and Lakshya jumping all over me.

This is all for now. Will post more later.

What I did over the weekend

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 3:24 PM

This weekend me and Richa visited Rakhi Didi again. Richa came over in the morning and we both drove over to Rakhi didi’s place. We had lunch and then didi told us that her car had a flat tire so we all went down to the car and I showed them how to change a car’s tire. Once we changed the tire we went to a shop to get the flat repaired. Over there we found a 1 inch nail embedded in the tire which had destroyed the tube so we had to get a new one.

Then we drove to Ria’s school in Greater Noida where we picked up her books for the new academic year. By the time we got home it was 5 pm and the swimming pool had opened so all of us went to the pool where I tried to teach Ria how to swim. I say tried because Ria is scared of the water and clung to me like a limpet most of time. Though after a while she actually started swimming and did it pretty well.

While I was teaching her a couple of ladies came up to me and asked me if I was the new coach. Had to disappoint them by saying no. During the lessons one of the girls who was watching us said “Uncle, take her to the middle of the pool and let her come back on her own” It took a few seconds for me to process that the uncle she was calling was me. It was a bit of a surprise but I guess we are getting old.

Then we went back home and talked till almost 1 am. Then we went to sleep and got up at 7 am so that we could be at home to receive Padmini Buaji and kids who were in town for a day. We spent the entire day looking at Surabhi’s wedding photos, watching the wedding video and talking. It was a lot of fun.

In the evening we had to attend a dinner and she had to catch a train at 10:30pm so I dropped them off at the station. The rest of the night was uneventful. The weather is starting to get warmer. Now I have to keep the fan on because otherwise my room gets super hot.

Well this is all for now. Will write more later.

My weekend: School anual days, teaching driving and having fun

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:47 PM

This weekend was fun, I went over to my cousin Rakhi Didi’s place for the weekend so that I could attend my Niece’s (Ria) annual day celebration at school where she was performing a dance.

The show started at 4:30 pm but the kids were supposed to be there by 2 pm to practice and get ready so we saw Ria off in the school bus and then me and Rakhi didi talked and caught up with each other’s lives. Jijaji is in the US right now on a project so it was just the two of us. Then at 3:30 we left home to be at the school (Ryan International School) by 4.

The performance was awesome. I mean you don’t expect kids from LKG – 5th class to be so talented. The kids did everything from announcing the next item to performing some really cute dances. The whole thing brought back a lot of memories. A long time ago I had also taken part in the school Annual day functions and used to have a blast.

We got back home by 9 pm and once Ria went off to sleep me and didi talked some more. We were up till pretty late. Then didi looked tired so we went to sleep.

The next day also I played with Ria and didi and in the evening Didi drove me back to our place. She is just learning how to drive so she was a bit nervous but she drives pretty well. All she needs is practice.

Overall a fun weekend.

Some random thoughts/comments/updates

Filed under: My Life,My Thoughts — Suramya @ 3:04 PM

* Watched a hailstorm from the safety of my room with my parents yesterday. It was awesome, some of the hailstones were almost 1/2 cm in diameter. I did have to go out once to move the car so that the hail didn’t mess up the paint. Got a couple of hits on my head during this for my trouble.

* Installed Linux on my desktop over hereas I needed a system where I could install/debug my scripts. Also resizing a lot of pics in Linux in easier than in Windows. In Linux all I need to do is run the following command and it resizes all the jpg files in the current directory to 1024 x whatever (It maintains the aspect ratio) mogrify -resize 1024x *.jpg. I haven’t found anything that does the same in windows yet and resizing pics manually is a pain.

* Also re-installed Windows on the same system. Its a lot less painful than what it used to be. However, some things to note:

  • My USB ports weren’t detected until I installed SP2 and then installed the drivers
  • The max resolution I was getting was 800×600 until I installed the VGA drivers
  • The USB not getting detected meant that my USB mouse didn’t work. Good thing I had a PS2 keyboard…

On the other hand Linux detected all my hardware without issues. I did use Kanotix.com’s Live linux CD to jump start the install process so it wasn’t really a completely fair test. Once I installed it to my harddisk for some reason it decided to not initialize my network card but it was a 2 min fix. Other than that I didn’t face any issues with the install. So if you want to play with Linux/Install Linux with a minimum of hassle then use Kanotix to install it. One of these days I am going to install Gentoo on my system just to try it out. Personally I love Debian (Kanotix is a Debian based system).

* Reading the Blood series (Also known as the Vicki Nelson series) by Tanya Huff. Its about Vampires/paranormal and how a particular ex-cop (Vicki) interacts with them. Pretty interesting. However the 4th book didn’t start off that well. I think the author is going to make the characters more emotional/whinny which would suck.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Eye now better :)

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 8:05 AM

My eye infection is now finally fixed. 🙂 Had to take some antibiotics and endure some hot water massages and sticky eye medicines but finally no more…

Now I can use my computer without eye irritation and I have a couple of projects I want to work on and complete. Won’t tell you what they are so if I decide not to do them no one will nag me 😉

More updates later.

Stupid eye infection

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:18 AM

Got a stupid eye infection in my left eye. Its nothing bad, the eye is just a bit swollen up and it itches like crazy. Mostly its very annoying. Washing it seems to stop the itching for a little while so I will be washing the eye every 15 mins till its healed.

Putting some really sticky eye medicine in the eye in the meantime but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything other than make it hard for me to see…

Well this is all for now. I guess I should goto sleep early today. 🙁

I am back

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:18 AM

I am back… This break from writing the blog was a bit longer than what I had intended initially but I think it was required. So here’s what I have been upto this past month:

1. Attended weddings/receptions. I attended a lot of those, and it was a bit of a shock to see so many of your classmates tying the knot. Now in a couple of months one of my friends will be a mom. Man I feel old.

2. Went to a trip to Rajasthan to attend a housewarming in Chappar. Three days of doing nothing but relaxing with no phones/computers. Just what the doctor ordered.

3. In the process of updating photos.suramya.com to use the Yahoo User Interfaces. The beta version is ready. Will be putting it live sometime over the weekend.

4. Categorized Surabhi’s wedding photos. There were over 2k photos. In the process of posting them to the website (No, not all of them 😉 ). They will go live with the new photogallery over the weekend.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Surabhi’s married!!

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 2:17 PM

My little sister got married on the 23rd. Still haven’t gotten used to it. Going to her reception in another 3 hours. So will be busy there…

Took lots of pics. Actually I didn’t take a lot of pics, my cousin Axu, Ashosk Bhaiya and Ganesh Phufaji took most of the pics cause I was busy with stuff most of the time. Reema, Jessica, Paula, Sophia and Renny also took a lot of pics. Just to give you an idea of the amount of pics, we have over 850 pics just from Paula and Reema’s camera’s. This is seperate from the 4 GB of video files I have sitting on the system.

So once I get back from the reception I will sort through the pics and will post the best online.

Once all the crazyness passes i will resume blogging on a semi regular basis.

Lifes a bit busy to blog about

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 1:11 AM

Life is a bit busy right now so no time to blog about it:

1. Moved out of my apartment in the US, dumped everything in storage. will be moving into a new one when I get back.

2. Flew to India for my sisters wedding.
3. Currently busy with the wedding preparations, distributing cards etc.
4. Net connection is only active in one room till I get the wireless router working (Need to find a power supply for it)
5. Friends wedding also coming up so need to attend that.

Plus assorted stuff that needs to be taken care of before the wedding. Also have to figure out who is arriving when so that someone can go receive them.

Over all its fun. Tiring but fun. Will post more when I get some time.

Happy New Year

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 9:11 PM

Wishing You all a Happy New Year. Hope you had a great new years Party and may all your wishes come true in the days to come.

We went to Madhur, Naresh and Sam’s place for new years. A lot of people were there, we spent a couple of hours dancing, followed by another couple of hours of playing dumb charades. Our team won by a big margin in the first game. It got so bad that we were guessing the name of movie within seconds so we reshuffled the teams then the game was a lot of fun. But by that time everyone was dead tired (This was around 5:30 am).

Pics will be coming soon. Once I get the powersupply replaced on my system. It has the editing software I use to ‘fix’ the photos (Clean them up, remove red eyes etc). Worse comes to worse I will install it on my laptop and use it on it. However my laptop harddrive is dying so want to wait for the new disk before I install more junk on it.

Lets see… Will keep you posted.
