My weekend and some thoughts on the press

Filed under: My Life,My Thoughts — Suramya @ 10:01 AM

This weekend was a particularly fun weekend. Surabhi was in town for a couple of days so I got the enjoy her company with my parents. It was nice to be together as a family after such a long time. It had been a while since we all got together and just relaxed. We spent most of the weekend just talking.

Today was mom’s birthday but since Surabhi was leaving on the 22nd we decided to celebrate it on the 21st with a dinner at the Golf course. We decided to have Chinese food I ordered some spicy garlic noodles and something Manchurian and I really liked it. I like the Indian version of the Chinese food as they put a lot of spices and stuff in it but I don’t like the way they make Chinese food in the US ’cause it tastes like they just boil a bunch of vegetables together and serve it. (Yuck…)

Then on Sunday we had a little surprise birthday ‘party’ for mom. We got cake and candles and decorated it in my room without telling mom, when we were ready papa called her into the room and we surprised her. It was great.

I also bought the latest harry potter for Surabhi. Its an expensive book (Probably because it is a hardcover book). But you have to see the hype over here. This is the first time I have seen so much excitement over a book in India.

That brings me to another topic, the Times of India and Aaj Tak network have no clue on how to promote books. My mom told me that she was watching the news to hear more about the presidential election that were going on and right in the middle of it there was a banner floating at the bottom of the screen giving away a major plot point. The worse part was that this was before the book was officially released. They found out about it by reading the leaked version of the book and decided to share it.

Even Times of India did the same thing, they had this photo of two kids posing next to a Harry Potter cutout and the caption read “In the epilogue of the book …..” (They gave away the ending but I am not ’cause I don’t want to spoil it for fans)

I mean come on, don’t you have any common sense? This is a book that people have been waiting for ages for. Would they do the same for a mystery movie that came out? No right? (At least I hope so) so why are they spoiling the ending of a good book? Anyways, I still haven’t read the book yet.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Should I spoil the ending of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:25 PM

Its official, the latest Harry Potter book “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is now out on the web on most torrent sites. Someone took a camera and took photos of every page of the book and posted it online. Now, I have seen copies of the book online but haven’t read it yet. Why not? ’cause I am not a HP fan. While I will probably read the book, I will first have to read the previous 6 books so that I can figure out whats going on. Its been ages since I read the last one and I have forgotten most of the story.

I have the last page as an image file that a friend emailed to me. Now the question in front of me is… Do I be really evil and post the last page of the book here? The second question is; will I survive if I do that? (’cause if no one else does it, Surabhi will kill me)

If you want a copy of the last page, feel free to leave a message in the comments. Depending on my mood and how evil I feel I just might mail it to you if you ask(Just the last page. Not the book). Though I suggest that you buy the book if you are a fan. I am not so I am not buying the book.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Watched Harry Potter yesterday

Filed under: My Life,My Thoughts — Suramya @ 5:16 AM

I went and watched Harry Potter yesterday. It was an ok movie but I am glad that I watched in India where I paid Rs 120 (< $3) for it instead of watching it in the US where I would have paid ~ $10 for it. The main reason I didn't like the movie is that I am not a harry potter fan and the movie was too slow moving for me. 'cause I am not a Lord of the Rings fan either but I liked the movies. Just going to share some of my thoughts on the movie so if you haven't seen it yet stop reading because the remainder of the post might contain spoilers. The main thing that i found weird was that they went and created this army and Harry spent a lot of time training them to fight. But when they finally went to fight only the five of them went. Why? Couldn't they wait a few more mins and gather everyone, after all most of them were there in the office... Anyways, I like the Die Hard 4.0 much better than this one. So far the only movie that I really liked this summer were, Fantastic 4 2 and Die Hard 4.0. This is all for now. Will post more later. - Suramya

General updates on life

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 10:10 PM

These past few days I have been going on early morning walks with my mom. Its a nice time to take a walk as long I don’t have to wake up at that time. Earlier we used to do Yoga but I prefer to walk/jog. The reason we switched is because of the heat; as past few weeks have been pretty hot. However now that the monsoon is finally here the temperatures have gone down a lot which I love.

Today it started raining just as we were getting home from our walk. Another few mins and we both would have been drenched, which I guess would have been fun. When we were kids I loved playing in the rain. Actually I still do but don’t get the time and don’t have company. We used to play soccer in the rain. Now that I think about it I feel sorry for mom, when I remember the state of our clothes after our games. We would be covered in mud. It used to get so bad that we were forbidden to enter through the front door and had to come in through the back door straight to the bathroom. God I miss those days.

Sakshi came over day before Yesterday with her parents came over for a visit and we had a really nice time catching up with each other’s lives. Have to visit her before she moves to Hongkong. Might do that today or tomorrow (Depending on whether I wake up on time or not). Her kid is cute. As long as he doesn’t cry (Crying baby’s and me don’t go together that well)

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Take care,

No updates till next week (Maybe)

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 12:14 PM

It still surprises me sometimes when I look at the stats for my blog and see that so many people visit my blog. Its flattering to think that so many people find what I write interesting.

Any ways this is just to let everyone know that I have been crazily busy at work so have no time/energy for blogging. I hope to have most of this stuff taken care of soon so maybe, just maybe I will start blogging again next week. Till then, take care and thanks for visiting.

iPhone is not going to be my phone…

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:55 AM

I am getting pretty tired of the hype that is surrounding the iPhone. Every website I check there are atleast 2 articles/news on it about the iPhone and a lot of people I know are eagerly waiting for it. I am not.

I am a person who usually goes for the latest software and products. e.g. I am typing this entry using Gran Paradiso (Firefox 3 Alpha 5) and when I bought my phone it was one of the latest in the market. But I don’t fall in for the hype. If a product has too much hype surrounding it and if it becomes a status symbol to own it then I am more likely than not to not buy it/get it. e.g. gMail accounts were the big things 2(?) years ago but since it was considered so much of a status symbol and considering the fact that I didn’t need another email account I never bothered getting one till almost an year ago when I had to get it to start using Orkut.

So why am I not getting the iPhone? Many reasons… First, I don’t like the way it looks. It looks ugly. Everyone is jumping around claiming that the interface is revolutionary but none of them have actually used it (Well, neither have I but..). Once they do they will come to the same conclusion that I have. Its clunky. Yes its shiny and new. But thats not a reason for which I would buy a $600 phone.

Second, it doesn’t allow you to install other apps. I love adding new software to my phone. That way I can enhance it by adding features that it doesn’t support by default. I might not, but that that doesn’t excuse them making the phone so that I can not. (Yes I know that they are making Safari a platform for development on iPhone)

The battery like sucks. It only gives you abut 6 hours of talk time/net access.

My Nokia 6270 gives me most of the features for 1/2 the price and the new N series from Nokia does pretty much everything that iPhone does for a lot cheaper.

Ah well, hopefully this craze will pass soon. I am sure that the iPhone is going to sell a lot initially thanks to the ohh shiny crowd, the apple fans and the gotta have the latest status symbol crowd. But in the long run I don’t think its a worthwhile investment. I would rather spend my money somewhere else like a new laptop. or maybe a new mp3 player.

Being connected rules! :)

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 12:44 PM

Now that I have a new cell phone that actually receives calls when I am at home I have actually started having a social life again. 🙂 On Sat night I got a call at 9:45 pm from Ruth asking if I would be able to make it for a surprise Birthday party for Rebecca. So me and Axu (My cousin) left for it by 10:15 pm. This wouldn’t have been possible with my old cell connection.

I have been receiving replies to my mails that basically go “Thank god. now we can actually contact you when we need to”…

Been really busy thats why no posts for so long and thats why this post is going to be cut short as well..

Got a new cell number

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 3:44 PM

As some of you know I have been having issues with my old cell provider (BSNL). Basically I would never get any phone signal at home and at times even when I got signal it would not allow calls to come through. As you can probably guess that sucked a lot. The funny part was that I was getting a full signal at DhanaChuli which is in the middle of nowhere but at home I barely get a single bar. That too if I was lucky.

So today I finally got an Airtel SIM card and now I am getting a full signal no matter where I go in the house. Obviously that means that my cell # changed. So I will be sending out an SMS and email to all my friends/family to give them the new number.

If you need my cell # email me and I will mail it to you. Or you can check my profile on Orkut if you are in my friends list ’cause there is no way I am posting it over here.

Well this is all for now. Here’s to a better connected me 🙂

This weekend

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 10:58 AM

This weekend sucked big time. I was hoping to use it to relax and catch up with some work, but unfortunately it didn’t go as planned.

First I had a sinusitis attack which made it hard to think much less work. Then something happened to my ear, It feels like I have cotton stuffed in it. Have put medicine in it hopefully it will work, so far it doesn’t look like it is. If not then I will have to goto a ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist and get it looked at. This ear is making it hard for me to work/listen to music as I can barely hear from one ear.

Then my net connection died for most of the weekend. It wasn’t fun. My UPS decided it was time to quit working so I don’t have any battery backup. If the power goes I get knocked off the net. I do have inverter but I am scared to connect my computer equipment to it because I don’t trust it (See this post for reasons).

Now my vonage line has decided to stop working. Wonder when it will start again.

Oh to top it all off I decided to backup my data (I use rsync to backup data) over the weekend so I ran the command to back up my data. Unfortunately I accidentally ran the command that synced the data from the server to the laptop instead of the other way round so I lost a couple of days of changes. Mostly on code that I was working on. Some of it was on my other laptop and some of the code I had open in editors so I managed to save a little but most of it I will have to redo. 🙁

Note to Self/advise to others: Don’t attempt to backup when you are half asleep.

Ah well. Now I am tired, sick, have to redo my code changes. Here’s to a glorious new day!

My vacation

Got back from a five day vacation in the hills and it was an amazing experience. Its so pretty and peaceful over there that its unbelievable. We left from Noida at 5 am to pick up Deepa Aunty from her place and then drove to DhanaChuli which is near Nanital. It was a great drive and we talk about everything and anything with discussions ranging from; politics to religion to philosophy to current affairs. It took us almost 10 hours to reach there because of traffic and some detours.

Once we got there we stayed at a cottage in the hills that overlooked our land. Spent the day relaxing and talking with people. There were 9 of us over there so there were some interesting discussions. It had rained earlier in the day so the place looked clean and washed. Went to bed early because I had had only ~2 hours of sleep in the past 24 hours but we got up early the next day, had a nice breakfast sitting outside in the sun (I almost got sunburnt) and I played with the dogs (There were 3 of them: Annie, Nancy and Goldie)

The next day was the same; relaxed and enjoyed the sun. I flew my RC plane but I think the batteries I was using in the remote were weak so the plane didn’t fly that well, it was nose diving after flying for a little distance, so we decided to adjust the flaps but we did it the wrong way so the plane was nose diving almost immediately after the adjustment. Realized the mistake after a couple of hours (We had packed up the plane after a couple of crashes. ) but didn’t get a chance to try it again.

We walked around the property and I took a lot of pics. Will post them up shortly. We also drove to a few places which were really nice but I can’t recall their names or spell them correctly so I won’t try…

We left from there on Wednesday morning at 9:30 am and got back in Delhi at 7 pm. Its really hot over here compared to there. On Tuesday we actually had a hailstorm over there which was nice (I wasn’t driving, so I could enjoy the view) and the entire time we were there we had to wear jackets as it was cold.

Well this is all for now. Will post pics later. Now its back to the rat race for me..
