Open Source Alternatives

Using open source doesn’t mean that you have to run Linux. Its just that Linux has sort of become the flagship of the Open Source Software (OSS) and whenever a person talks about OSS the general perception is that you need linux to enjoy/use OSS. But thankfully this is not true. Even on my Windows system most of the applications I use are open source. e.g. OpenOffice for word processing, Firefox for browsing, GIMP for image manipulation etc.

Now a major problem which newcomers have is that its difficult to figure out what Open Source alternatives are available for a given popular commercial software. The Open Source Alternative website attempts to solve this issue by giving a listing of the various OSS alternatives available for a given proprietary program.

Check it out, you might find some software that replaces the current program you use thus saving you a lot of money.

New photogallery now live

Filed under: Website Updates — Suramya @ 12:56 PM

The beta version of the new Photogallery interface is now live. This version uses Yahoo User Interface controls to make the gallery more responsive and nicer. Check it out at: http://photos.suramya.com and let me know if you find any issues.

The old version of the gallery is still available over here.

Thanks,

I am back

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:18 AM

I am back… This break from writing the blog was a bit longer than what I had intended initially but I think it was required. So here’s what I have been upto this past month:

1. Attended weddings/receptions. I attended a lot of those, and it was a bit of a shock to see so many of your classmates tying the knot. Now in a couple of months one of my friends will be a mom. Man I feel old.

2. Went to a trip to Rajasthan to attend a housewarming in Chappar. Three days of doing nothing but relaxing with no phones/computers. Just what the doctor ordered.

3. In the process of updating photos.suramya.com to use the Yahoo User Interfaces. The beta version is ready. Will be putting it live sometime over the weekend.

4. Categorized Surabhi’s wedding photos. There were over 2k photos. In the process of posting them to the website (No, not all of them 😉 ). They will go live with the new photogallery over the weekend.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Surabhi’s married!!

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 2:17 PM

My little sister got married on the 23rd. Still haven’t gotten used to it. Going to her reception in another 3 hours. So will be busy there…

Took lots of pics. Actually I didn’t take a lot of pics, my cousin Axu, Ashosk Bhaiya and Ganesh Phufaji took most of the pics cause I was busy with stuff most of the time. Reema, Jessica, Paula, Sophia and Renny also took a lot of pics. Just to give you an idea of the amount of pics, we have over 850 pics just from Paula and Reema’s camera’s. This is seperate from the 4 GB of video files I have sitting on the system.

So once I get back from the reception I will sort through the pics and will post the best online.

Once all the crazyness passes i will resume blogging on a semi regular basis.

Lifes a bit busy to blog about

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 1:11 AM

Life is a bit busy right now so no time to blog about it:

1. Moved out of my apartment in the US, dumped everything in storage. will be moving into a new one when I get back.

2. Flew to India for my sisters wedding.
3. Currently busy with the wedding preparations, distributing cards etc.
4. Net connection is only active in one room till I get the wireless router working (Need to find a power supply for it)
5. Friends wedding also coming up so need to attend that.

Plus assorted stuff that needs to be taken care of before the wedding. Also have to figure out who is arriving when so that someone can go receive them.

Over all its fun. Tiring but fun. Will post more when I get some time.

Happy New Year

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 9:11 PM

Wishing You all a Happy New Year. Hope you had a great new years Party and may all your wishes come true in the days to come.

We went to Madhur, Naresh and Sam’s place for new years. A lot of people were there, we spent a couple of hours dancing, followed by another couple of hours of playing dumb charades. Our team won by a big margin in the first game. It got so bad that we were guessing the name of movie within seconds so we reshuffled the teams then the game was a lot of fun. But by that time everyone was dead tired (This was around 5:30 am).

Pics will be coming soon. Once I get the powersupply replaced on my system. It has the editing software I use to ‘fix’ the photos (Clean them up, remove red eyes etc). Worse comes to worse I will install it on my laptop and use it on it. However my laptop harddrive is dying so want to wait for the new disk before I install more junk on it.

Lets see… Will keep you posted.

Sending an e-mail to users whose password is about to expire

If you have users that don’t login to a windows system or Outlook Web access and just use POP/IMAP to download emails then you must be used to having these people call in to have their passwords reset when their passwords expire which can be a pain.

The following script sends out an email to Exchange users when their passwords are about to expire so that they can login to change their password and not bother you.

Download the script from here: Sending an e-mail to users whose password is about to expire

Will post the script to do the same on Unix/Linux systems later.

Thanks,
Suramya

PS: I DIDN’T WRITE THE SCRIPT SO IF IT DESTROYS YOUR SYSTEM DON’T BLAME ME.
