India Partners with EU to prevent India’s traditional medicinal knowledge from Biopiracy

India has a huge medical repository that is not available online anywhere. In some cases the knowledge is not even written down but is passed verbally from teacher to student. For example there was a Vaidh (Ayurvedic Doctor) in my mom’s village who was an expert but none of his knowledge was ever written down. Unfortunately his son wasn’t interested in medicine so when he passed away all his knowledge was lost.

This initiative will help document the repository of knowledge and prevent bio-piracy from happening. So now that the database is up the people providing the patents will know that the healing properties of “Neem” for example are well known for thousands of years and they can’t award a patent on it.

Here’s some background information on how the database came to be created and was set up:

The genesis of this maiden Indian effort dates back to the year 2000, when an interdisciplinary Task Force of experts was set up by AYUSH and CSIR, to devise a mechanism on protection of India’s traditional knowledge. The TKDL expert group estimated that about 2000 number of wrong patents concerning Indian systems of medicine were being granted every year at international level, mainly due to the fact that, India’s traditional medicine knowledge exists in languages such as Sanskrit, Hindi, Arabic, Urdu, Tamil etc. and was neither accessible nor understood by patent examiners at the international patent offices due to language and format barriers.

The TKDL breaks these barriers and has been able to scientifically convert and structure the information available in languages like Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Tamil, in open domain text books into five international languages, namely, English, Japanese, French, German and Spanish, with information contents in 30 million A4 size pages, with the help of Information Technology tools and a novel classification system – Traditional Knowledge Resource Classification (TKRC).

What I would love to see happen (which is probably not going to) is that this database be opened to the public also so anyone can search through it and see the medical advances that India had/has made in the past few thousand years. Afterall most of the stuff in there is already “common knowledge”

Trip to Sultanpur Bird sanctuary

Last Saturday we went for a trip to the Sultanpur Bird sanctuary from work. The trip started at 6 am for me as thats when I left home to pick up Ashwani, Harish O, Harish T and Ram Awadh from the office. On the way to the office I inaugurated the birdwatching by spotting a chicken on the road.

Surprisingly everyone was on time and we made it to Nehru Place which was our meeting point for the rest of the group at 7:15am there we hot tea while we waited for the rest of the group (Dhiraj, Shobhna and Angad) to join us in Angad’s car. After a quick snack we left for the bird sanctuary picking Sanjay and his wife and son on the the way.

The drive there was a long one. Unfortunately there were no road sign’s anywhere telling us how to get to the place so we kept having to ask people for directions. For some weird reason people kept pointing us to the long route to the place. About 3/4th of the way there we found out that the route we were following was impassable because a bridge was being constructed on it. So we had to turn back and drive 15 kms back on the way we came and take an alternate route.

On the way we stopped at a field and took pics there. Once we made it to the Sanctuary we had a great time. We saw a lot of the birds and no I don’t know their species. All I can remember now is that we saw Peacocks, Parrots, A few kinds of white birds and a couple of black birds.

I had taken a boomerang with me and we all tried to get it to come back to us. Harish T was the only one that managed to do that. Thankfully it didn’t get stuck in the tree’s.

I had also taken my Remote Controlled place with me, but unfortunately the built in battery in the plane was almost dead so we couldn’t really fly it. So we decided to go with the old faithful and had a cricket match.

On the way back we found a direct road to Gudguan. Though calling it a road is a bit of a stretch as it was more like driving on a dirt trail than an actual road. There was a lot of construction going on so that probably was the reason why this road was so broken. Hopefully the fly-overs will be completed soon and the road will get a bit better.

This post was delayed for so long as I was procrastinating putting up the photos on the photogallery but luckily Shobhna is less lazy than I am so she has put up the photos from the trip here: http://picasaweb.google.co.in/shobhna.sharma/SultanpurOfficeTrip2009

In the near future I will probably also post the photos on my site. In the mean time enjoy.

So you think your life is hard/sucks?

Filed under: My Thoughts — Suramya @ 5:54 PM

A lot of people go around complaining that their life is so hard and it sucks… They don’t know the meaning of a hard life.

Today while driving to work I noticed a bunch of kids in rags squatting down in the middle of the road picking something. At first I had no idea what they were doing. As I was driving past I saw one of the kids lick her palm which had a white powder on it, so I looked closely at the road and realized that at some point in time sugar was spilled on the road and these kids were picking it up and eating it as if it was a treat. To them it is a treat.

Now think about the times that you have thrown food away because it didn’t taste right or you didn’t feel like eating. Or because you were greedy and took too much and couldn’t finish. Feeling bad yet? No? You should. I am.

You may think that you have a hard life when you had to work an extra 3 hours or didn’t get your favorite food at home. That’s not a hard life. A hard life is when you have no idea when you are going to get your next meal. A hard life is when you are 12 years old and you know by personal experience that mixing a little bit of flour in water and drinking it will make you feel full and not get hunger cramps.

So still think your life is hard?

Happy new year + Random thoughts

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 10:08 PM

Happy New Year everyone.

This was supposed to be a continuation of my week in HK series but my laptop started having issues (The screen would stop working at random times) so I couldn’t post from there. Once I got back, life obviously got really really busy.

I was waiting to post as I wanted to share the photos from the trip in the post but… Ah well. I have posted some of the pics in my Facebook profile and one of these days I will also post them in my album here.

* Thinking about updating the photogallery script and adding comments functionality to the gallery. Also, maybe an rss feed just for the pics. So that I can post the pics here and publish them elsewhere also by including the feed…

* Have created a collage generator for Linux using Imagemagic and Bash scripting. Its a small script (80 lines) but it works great. *Note to self*: Publish the script on the site

* Need to find a good Mexican place in Delhi. Have heard about one in CP but haven’t checked it out yet.

* need to start posting more often on the blog. When I started I used to post one entry a day. Now its gone down to a post a month, maybe 2. This needs to change.

* Wonder if I should start making micro-blog posts. Just one or two line entries about whatever I am thinking about.

* I got a cool new RC (Remote Controlled) helicopter that Surabhi & Vinit got for me.

* Hopefully I will fly this more often than my RC plane which has only been flown once in the past two years. Although I can fly this indoors so I think I should be able to fly it more often.

* Found a mosaic creation script. Thinking about playing with it to make some nice mosaic’s. Lets see.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Trip To Hongkong: Day 2

Day 2 was a very uneventful day. Spent most of it sleeping to recover from the lack of sleep the day before. Surabhi and Vinit had gone to China for work and Manjesh was at work. So me and Sakshi were at home and we slept a lot. 🙂

Then in the evening me and Sakshi went for a walk down HK and did a bit of window shopping. Ended up buying some jewelry for friends/cousins at a really good price.

Came back home and watched a movie. Overall a very relaxing day. Tomorrow is going to be a lot more busy.

Trip To Hongkong: Day 1

Hey everyone. After a long time I have taken some time off and traveled to Hong Kong for a week long vacation. I will be here till the 4th of Jan.

The trip started off on the 27th with my departure for the Airport at 6:15pm for a 10:15 pm flight. The traffic was bad as usual so it took us almost one hour to get to the airport. Once I got there I found out that the checkin for my flight hadn’t started yet but the guy at the counter was nice enough to check me in. Then I wanted to convert some currency to Hongkong dollars so that when I get to HK I could use the facilities and purchase items if required but I was told that they didn’t have any HK dollars so I ended up buying US dollars.

The flight departed on time but overall the experience was bad. It wasn’t the worst flight I have flown but it was up there in the top three.

It arrived in HK on time and I got to convert my money to HK dollars without issues. I didn’t have the address or directions to get to Sakshi’s place (I am staying at their place) so I had to call them up to get the address and directions. Sakshi was nice enough to come pick me up from the station after I took the airport express to the HK city.

Once we got home we talked for a while and then relaxed for a couple of hours, had breakfast and basically just chilled. At 3 pm we left to visit the casino’s in Macao. The trip to Macao was nice. We took a ferry to the place and the one hour journey are very comfortable. Initially the sea was a bit choppy but later on the ride was very smooth.

Over there we went to the Venetian which is this huge Casino. Inside the Casino they had a show of “Zaia” which is a dream of a young girl who journeys into space on a strange, yet familiar voyage of self-discovery. As she travels, she encounters the beauty of humanity and eventually brings it back with her to share with the inhabitants of earth. So me, Vinit and Surabhi went for it.

Basically the story is not the important part, infact while I was watching it I had no idea of what the story was. Its an amazing display of acrobatics/performances. Think of a circus in a musical setting.

It was a great experience and we all enjoyed it a lot. After the show all of us along with Sakshi and Manjesh spent a few hours at the casino playing Blackjack. (Actually they all played while I watched as I am not that big a fan of casino’s/gambling)

We then took the ferry back to HK and got back home. Had a late snack of Maggi noodles and everyone crashed. (I will do so once I finish this entry).

Tomorrow is going to be a fun/busy day. Planning on roaming around the city. Should be fun.

Well this is all for now. Will write more tomorrow (Hopefully)

Userfulness of school activities in work

This is so true. The same holds for college studies. Most of what I find useful at work is stuff I learnt myself…

Life update

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 6:58 PM

I was planning on making a separate for all the stuff/trips I have made since the 5th but it doesn’t look like its going to happen soon. So instead of waiting to post a detailed description here’s a brief summary:

1. 5th Dec: Went to Nagpur for Nirmit’s wedding with KM and Yayati. It was a fun trip, we took the train down so it was a 17 hour journey one way. On the way to Nagpur a project was going live so we had an interesting time working from the train. Stayed their over the weekend and then got back on Monday.

2. 10th Dec: Attended Chavi’s wedding. Got home late at night, grabbed a couple of hours of sleep then me, Vinit and Surabhi drove to Goon for the wedding. The wedding was pretty late at night (the phera’s started at 1am) and since I had to be back at work the next day I went off to sleep during the phera’s. Started back home at 5am and got there at about 6.

So there you have it a brief update. There was other stuff that happened but not feeling like typing it all out..

My Birthday

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:19 PM

This years birthday was fun. I was at work till 1:30 am (my usual time) and then I drove home. Once I got there I tried to open the door but it was locked from inside so I rang the bell. Axu opened the door and I went to the room and threw my jacket and laptop bag on the bed. Then I turned around and switched on the lights and Mom, dad, Jeeto Mausi, Richa & Axu were standing there for a surprise party.

They had decorated the room with balloons and got cake. Thankfully the jacket I threw on the bed missed the cake by a few inches. We cut the cake and Richa, got me a really nice shirt and a great card.

After having the cake and taking some photos we all went to sleep. The rest of the day wasn’t very eventful as it was a weekday and I had a project delivery coming up.

Have an outing planed the end of the month instead. Lets see how that works out.

Recharge Batteries using wind power

Filed under: Tech Related — Suramya @ 11:55 PM

I want one… This is such a cool idea. One way to recharge would be to put the battery in the charger and stick it on the windshield of a car when you are driving somewhere so that by the time you reach your destination your batteries are all charged and ready to use.

Check it out: Febot Recharges Batteries
