My trip to Lake Placid

As some of you might know I took a four day trip with friends to Lake Placid, NY and I just got back. This was one fo the most fun trips I have taken in a while. Lake Placid is an awesome location with great Ski trails (They held the winter there in 1932 and 1980). I have been there earlier and loved it so we decided to take another trip there.

There were 10 of us on this trip: Me, Vinit, Surabhi, Pranav, Aarti, Sarang, Sandeep, Pradeep, Amit and Anu. All of us except Amit and Anu left from Newark, NJ (We had to leave the cars in the NJIT parking deck) at 4:30 am (so that we could miss all the traffic) in two cars. It was me, Sandeep, Pradeep and Sarang in one car and Surabhi, Vinit, Aarti and Pranav in the second car. The drive up there is beautiful and we were there in Lake Placid by 9:15 am. The cabin was really nice, it was located right next to the Ausable River and was really beautiful. Below is a pic of the cabin from the front.

We basically lazed around during the day. The cabin had a fireplace so we relaxed in front of it; played Uno, Vollyball and Climbed trees (That was just me) and slept (Some of us hadn’t slept the entire night before).

Enjoying the Fireplace

At night we had a bonfire and we fried Paneer (Cottage Cheese) and onions at the bonfire and had them. They tasted amazing. It was freezing outside and till we got the fire going it was literally a pain to stay outside inspite of all the jackets and gloves. But once we got the fire going the temperature became a lot more bearable. We were outside for a couple of hours atleast. The best part was that the bonfire area was near the river so if everyone stopped talking we could hear the river flowing and nothing else. There was absolute silence in the area. The night sky has never looked so awesome before.

Once the food was done we came back in and started talking about various horror movies we had seen, basically to scare Aarti, Vinit and Surabhi. We talked for a couple of hours and just as we were about to goto sleep Amit and Anu arrived and we talked for another hour before finally going to sleep.

The next day was also very relaxed and we all woke up by 9:30 am. While we were getting dressed Anu made tea for everyone (I had a soda as I don’t drink tea) and we had breakfast. After breakfast we went outside for a couple of hours of cricket.

Then once everyone was tired we left for Lake Placid and on the way we stopped by the AuSable river which had frozen (Not completely but just the top inch or inch and half) to toss stones and ice across it. It was a lot of fun. The really interesting part was that when we tossed a particularly large stone or ice piece we would get a cool echo.

After playing at the river for about an hour we drove around to the Lake Placid proper, visited the Olympic stadium and had dinner at this Italian place. After dinner we went back to the cabin and watched a couple of movies. Actually I just watched half of the first one when I got bored and left to read a book. After the first movie we decided to make another bonfire and roasted/grilled corn on it along with Yams. The corn tasted awesome but the Yams were ok. I think we shouldn’t have let them catch fire. That probably ruined the flavor. 😉 Aarti, Surabhi and Sandeep stayed inside while we were out by the bonfire. After eating we put out the fire and went back in and spent the next few hours just talking. We talked about everything from politics to cars to college life. We finally went to sleep at 4 am and that too because we were planning to go ice skating and had to get up for that.

We were originally planning on going skiing but since it hadn’t snowed yet none of the beginner trails were open yet and only the intermediate trails were open. So we went ice-skating. That also was a lot of fun. The rink was only open for 2 hours but we enjoyed ourselves a lot. After skating we went for lunch at a Mexican restaurant where the food was pretty good and the service was amazing.

After dinner we came back to the cabin as we had a few hours to kill before we went to the Stars on Ice show and just relaxed. I didn’t goto the show as my head was killing me but everyone else except Sarang went and really enjoyed the show. I basically finished my book and then went to sleep. Got up the next day feeling a lot better and had breakfast. Then after lazing around for a few hours while everyone got dressed we reluctantly left for home.

I was in Amit’s car with him and Anu and the drive back was non eventful, we did hit a lot of traffic at first but since we had a GPS and my black berry we choose an alternative route and managed to avoid most of the traffic.

Over all the trip was a lot of fun and I took a lot of photos (About 500+) so it will take me some time to sort through them and select pics to put in the photo gallery. However I have put up a zip file containing all the Lake Placid photos up on the web, you can download it from here.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Casino Royale: A must watch movie

Filed under: My Life,My Thoughts — Suramya @ 2:36 PM

Ok first a disclaimer, I am not a very big James Bond fan. I mean I liked the latest movies but I wouldn’t go back to watch the old ones over and over again. I loved the books though, Ian Fleming is one hell of a writer. This movie is based on his book by the same name which was the first James Bond book.

Me, Vinit, Surabhi, Pranav, Aarti, Tintisha and Jessica went for the first day first show today morning at 12:01 am. It was worth the time and effort. For some reason the theater for not that crowded as what I had expected (It was only half full) But I guess it could be because it was a Thursday night. We sat all the way up in the top and really enjoyed the show.

The best part about the movie was that is is completely different from the usual bond movies where Bond is this smooth character with all the cool gadgets that let him perform the most impossible mission with style. The Bond in this movie is a little rough on the edges and there are no cool gadgets involved (Q is not even shown/mentioned). He is a darker and more emotional character.

The movie started off with James Bond getting his 00 status by making his two kills, (which was a great way to start the movie) and then continued to build up on that great start. I loved the chase scene in the first 10 mins of the movie. The movie has some great action scenes and the casino scenes were really well directed. The movie kept true to the book for the most part with a few minor changes, but to tell what was changed would spoil the movie so I suggest you go watch it yourself. If you haven’t read the book and are not planning to you can get an idea of its plot over here

I didn’t like the movie theme song though, I think it was pathetic (I really liked the Golden Eye theme song).

Once the movie was over, we (Me, Vinit, Surabhi, Pranav, Aarti and Tintisha) went for a late night snack to some diner. The food there was awesome. We were there till almost 5 am. Got home at 5:30 am, went to bed at 6:00 am and woke up at 7:45 am. So a bit tired and sleepy
but it was worth it. Below is a photo that I took at the diner of all of us:

Watched ‘The Prestige’ yesterday

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:57 PM

Went and watched ‘The Prestige’ yesterday with Vinit, Me, Pranav, Vivek and Akhil. Originally I didn’t want to go for a movie but I am glad I did as the movie was amazing. For a change the movie actually had a plot and the actors could act. It wasn’t all about the special effects and CGI.

We originally wanted to watch the 11:15 pm show but since it was sold out we ended up watching the 12:30 am show. It was worth the wait. Once the movie was done we were all feeling a bit restless and didn’t want to take the train so we walked from 42nd street to 23rd street at 3 am. It was fun, a bit cold but fun. No, we haven’t gone completely nuts. It was just that we were talking, plus since for a change we didn’t have any girls in our group who would complain about being made to walk in heels we decided to enjoy it.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Got a new camera

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 8:03 PM

Got a new camera today 🙂
Yay!! Now I can take photographs anywhere and anytime. I got the Sony cyber shot T5, Its a 5.1 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom and a lot of other features that I haven’t fully explored yet.

Now I don’t have to wait for other people to send me the snaps from events/parties that I took photos on, so you will probably see faster updates to the photogallery.

Thanks for the gift Surabhi. And thanks Vinit for finding this camera and driving at 10 am on Saturday to get it.

Celebrated Anu’s birthday

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 12:02 AM

Yesterday (1st Nov) was Anu’s birthday so Anu, Amit, Myself, Vinit, Sandeep, Vivek and Pranav celebrated it with a quite dinner at Olive Garden. The food was as usual pretty good but the service was really slow. It took them over 40 mins after we placed the order to get the food. Thankfully they brought the appetizers a lot sooner so we didn’t starve.

Here’s a photo I took of the birthday girl during the dinner (Took it using my camera phone so its not the best quality…).

And no I wasn’t brave enough to ask her how old she was… All in all it was a good fun night. A big contrast from yesterday but still fun.

Celebrated Halloween and Vivek’s Birthday in NYC

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 5:20 AM

Oct 31 was Halloween (Also known as Samahain) and it was also Vivek’s birthday. So we (About 14 of us) decided to get together to celebrate both. We all got together at our place and took the Path train to New York to watch the annual New York Halloween parade. It was a lot of fun, everyone was dressed up in a costume and looked cool: Vinit was a Mafia boss, Reema was a cat, Aarti dressed up as the Pink Panther, Jyoti was dressed as the Devil and it was fun. Some of the costumes we saw were pretty amazing, people had spent a lot of time, energy and money on them and it showed. The best part was that everyone was having a good time.

After watching the parade for about 1 1/2 hours we decided to get something to eat as we all were starving and needed food. So we called and made a reservation at Uno Chicago Grill. We were about 2 blocks from the place so we were walking to it when we found out that the streets had been closed off for the parade and we had to walk all the way over to 11th street (from 4th street, to get to 6th street) and then walk back. Vivek managed to sneak across the barrier and waited for us to get there which took a while as we were busy admiring the costumes we could see.

The food was good but the company was better and we spent a lot of time just talking and enjoying the food. Yes I took a lot of photos and will post them soon.

Now its time for me to catch some sleep. Will post more later.

Update (3rd Nov 2006): Uploaded the Halloween photos to the Photo gallery.

My internet connection issues and how I fixed them

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 4:58 AM

The internet connection at our place had been down since Saturday morning. So I called up Comcast and made a complaint on Sat, they said that they would have someone come over on Tuesday to check the connection as everything seemed ok on their end and the problem was on my side. So I was like fine, I guess I can survive without the net for a couple of days.

Today the guy was supposed to come between 3 and 6 but I came home I noticed that the cable modem was still blinking and it didn’t look like anyone had come (We had told the super of the building to let the repair guy in) so I called up comcast to find out what happened. The lady I spoke to told me that the repair person had called it a night and since he had been running late he didn’t come to our place… How stupid is that? If I had stayed home from work by taking time off I would have wasted half of my day. The least they could have done was call me so I wouldn’t waste time waiting for him…

NEways, then she goes on to tell me that they can only have someone come over on Thursday. Thats when I blew my top and told her that it was their fault that the guy didn’t show up and I wanted someone here tomorrow to fix my connection. She said that she didn’t have the authority to change the schedule but that she would put in a request for me and I should call them up again tomorrow and talk to dispatch and have them send some one over. She was pretty nice and was feeling pretty sorry about this, so I was like fine… I will talk to them tomorrow.

While I was talking to her I was also playing around with the modem, I had remembered that the modem had a status page that I could get at so I starting looking at the values and it looked like we weren’t getting any signal from the comcast server. While playing with the status page, for some reason I had this feeling that someone might have disconnected our cable in the basement or something, because the net connection was working fine on Sat morning and it stopped working in the afternoon with no changes made.

So I went down to the basement and checked out the cable connections. I saw a couple of wires were disconnected but only one didn’t have any label on it (The others had apartment numbers on them) and I didn’t see a cable with our apartment number on it. I could see an open socket where I could plug the cable in, so just as a test I plugged it in and came back up and rebooted the modem, sure enough when it came back up I had connectivity. 🙂

If I find out who the idiot is that unplugged us, I would have a nice long chat with him/her…

Thankfully I was able to get connectivity back but it still doesn’t excuse Comcast’s handling of the situation. If I hadn’t figured it out myself I would have had to spend another 2 days without net access, which sucked. Now I have to call them and tell them that the issue is fixed. Don’t think I will tell them how I fixed it…

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Diwali was fun

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 10:10 PM

Yesterday was Diwali [1] and I celebrated it by visiting friends for dinner and a party. It was one of the most fun Diwali’s I have had in a while. We all drove to Edison to Aarti’s place and we got there at about 7pm. Once we got there we spent some time talking and meeting everyone. (I had Bhelpuri which tasted great) then we got together for puja. We did the whole 9 yards with the puja and the prayers and the lighting of the diya’s.

Once the Puja was done the actual party started and it was a blast. We danced for over 4 hours and it was a lot of fun (Though my body is aching a but today) A lot of people showed up and none of them were of the weird kind and they all just had fun (Including me). Yes I took a lot of pictures and they are on Aarti’s camera and I will post them when I get a copy. A couple of other people were also taking pics so we should have a good collection to choose from. I also took a couple of videos so will also post them if they came out good.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Burmese food tastes awesome

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:58 PM

Last night I went out to dinner with friends to the Burmese place in New York called Village Mingala It was a lot of fun and the food was great.

The restaurant was recommended by Meghna and she was worried that she would be blamed if no one liked the food but she need not have worried as the food was good. Vinit, Surabhi, Meghna, Madhur, Aarti, Vivek, Pranav, Sandeep, Gaurav and myself all dug into the food and we all ate a lot The best part was that the place was pretty cheap too.

The only down side of this place is that they don’t have any good deserts… They only had three dishes for deserts so we went to another place to get desert. We got kheer and Gulab Jamun’s and took them home to enjoy them while watching this hindi movie called Don (No its not the new one, This one was the original one…) We watched it on our projector so for a while our living room looked like a cinema. (Actually it still does, ’cause we found the arrangement to be more efficient so we left it as such)

In case you are wondering about all the restaurants I am writing about then its just that we are on this quest to try every kind of cuisine in the world, and so far we have tried: Indian (Duh..), Chinese, Burmese, Thai, Italian, Cuban, French, American, Egyptian and Turkish. I have probably missed some others we have tried but… I will post about my experiences with each kind as and when I try them…

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

– Suramya

PS: If you know any good places to try any particular cuisine let me know so I can try it out.
