Finally watched the new Sherlock movie

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:59 PM

Finally watched the new Sherlock movie today. One word review: bleah… Didn’t like the movie at all. They made it into an action movie but bare minimum of Sherlock touches so that they could claim that it was based on the books. Frankly, if you like the books then you should watch the BBC series ‘Sherlock‘ instead. They have done a way better job of portraying Sherlock than the movie even thought the series in based in 21st century London.

Considering a lot of people who were raving about this movie are the same ones who are raving about Mission Impossible 4, I am wondering if I should make the effort to go watch MI4.

I am going to go watch the latest episode of the second season of Sherlock Holmes now to purge my brain of this horrible movie.

Random Thoughts

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:10 PM

This is going to be a completely random posting of various thoughts/idea’s as I have a cold and can’t think straight:

* All sites should have an RSS feed, or some API that allows you to pull data off them for building on top of them. Was trying to get release dates for some of my favorite author’s works and found out that most sites with this info don’t have feeds that I can subscribe to.

* You know you are old, when you are talking to someone about a TV series that you watched as a kid and they tell you that they weren’t even born when the show was running. This happened to me a couple of days ago at work while talking to a few of my juniors.

* Moving webhosting requires way too much thought. Or I guess I am just weird that way. Going to move the site to a new hosting provider around the middle of this month. Still debating if I want to move the domain hosting as well or not.

* Wonder if there are any online grocery shopping places in Bangalore?

* New year resolution: Will be more in touch with friends this year.

That’s it. Can’t think more, so going to crash. Will write more later.

Stuff I want + Stuff I need

Stuff I want:
ThinkGeek :: Wi-Fi Detector Shirt: Just for the coolness factor I would get this. A shirt with a built-in Wi-Fi signal detector How cool is that? Yes, I know… What can I say, I am a geek.

Stuff I need:

Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock with Bed Shaker: As you all know I hate getting up in the morning and have a tendency to sleep through alarms. However I don’t think even I can sleep through a 113 decibels of alarm in the morning. (Don’t think my neighbors will like it but… )

Just so that you all know, my birthday is in December 😉

Upgrading my Desktop Hardware & Software

Filed under: My Life,Website Updates — Suramya @ 2:46 PM

Hey Everyone,

I am back. Yes, I was missing for almost a year. No, I won’t make excuses for why that happened. Moving on…

I have been having issues with my primary desktop for the past few months now, to the point where I was mainly using my GalaxyTab for most of my browsing/watching movies etc at home. It kept telling me that my Hard drive died so I decided to spend some time reinstalling Linux on a new drive. After I finished backing things up the system suddenly decided that none of my disks existed anymore and wouldn’t even detect them during boot-up. 🙁 So I connected the drives to an external case and plugged them into my laptop and they worked fine. This is when I decided that the problem had to be with the motherboard (as I had changed everything else: SATA cables, Hard drives etc)

So I went out and bought an AMD Phenom II x6 1055T processor and ASUS M4A88T-M Motherboard to put it in. Got everything assembled and then realized that the new board uses DDR3 RAM while my previous one had DDR2 RAM so had to go buy a 4GB DDR3 RAM chip. Finally got everything working and am now a proud owner of a working desktop. Had some issue with the Network card but was easily resolved. Will document the steps on the wiki later.

I have installed Debian 6.0 on the new system and then upgraded it to Debian Unstable (sid). The process is not as straight forward as usual and if you are not familiar with Linux its easy to get stuck. I hit a couple of snags that required me to search online for fixes and yes I will be documenting those as well in my next post. In the end all worked out and the server is stable and works without issues. Might try to overclock the CPU later to see how that goes, lets see.

Lastly, I upgraded wordpress on suramya.com to the latest version which unfortunately broke the theme I was using so the blog has a different layout right now than normal. I will be fixing this over the next few days.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Fog in delhi is just nuts

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 6:54 AM

Early morning flights in winter from Delhi is what is known as a ‘bad idea’. The fog is insane. This time I had a 6:45am flight and since we were expecting fog we left home at 4am.

The visibility was down to a couple of meters and at a couple of places it went down to zero visibility. At times driving was more of guess work than actually knowing where the road was. I was quite happy that I wasn’t the one driving. 🙂

At the moment I am sitting in the plane and the pilot just announced that we are no 28 in the departure queue and that we can expect a delay of about 20mins. 🙁

I guess I can use the time to blog :). Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Staying at home…

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 7:56 PM

Staying at home is a lot of fun, but not when you are woken up really early in the morning and given neem ka juice to drink every day. So far I have had it twice and that is 2 times too many. I think my taste buds are committing suicide as I write this. 😉

Other than the daily dose of Neem life here is good, I have been working from home for the past week so that I can finish up my wedding shopping etc and thus haven’t really spent a lot of time with the family but since tomorrow is a holiday I get to spend the whole day with family. hopefully I won’t get drafted to help move stuff around as the house is being painted, furniture being polished etc etc.

Watched Tron: Legacy a couple of day ago and really liked it. Didn’t really remember a lot of the original Tron so I am sure I missed a lot of subtext but it was still a cool movie and the effects were good, the 3D wasn’t overdone and wasn’t a prop to distract viewers from the lack of a storyline (like certain other movies I can name). Want to go watch the new Narnia movie also, but lets see. The only show in Noida is at 12:30 pm and that’s a bit too early for me to go watch a movie.

Well this is all for now. Not much to say at this point. Have a wonderful Holiday season and if I don’t post again before the New years (which is quite possible) a very Happy New Year!

Yikes! Its been over 2 months since I posted here

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 8:24 PM

Wow, I checked the blog today after a long time and realized that it’s been over 2 months since I posted anything.

I guess time does fly when you are having fun. The past few months have been fun. Finally settling down in bangalore with work and adjusting to having a life again. Another adjustment has been realizing that I will be married in a little over a months time.

Writing this at the airport waiting for my flight on my Galaxy Tab. Can’t for Airtel to launch 3G so I can surf faster when travelling.

Well this is all for now will post more later.

My new Harddisk crashed

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:12 PM

My new 2 TB HDD that I just bought about a month ago just crashed. Its not completely dead yet but it refused to let me write to the disk a couple of times and the disk has started making the click of death. Thankfully its still functional enough for me to copy the data off it. I had most of it except the music and movies already backed up so wasn’t too worried. But its functional enough that I am in the process of backing up everything to the other 1TB drive I have.

Might need to borrow drive space from Surabhi and Vinit till I get it replaced but atleast I didn’t loose data.

But I am disappointed in Segate. This is the first time i have had a drive die on me in a month. The others that died on me had reason to, one got dropped from the table the other traveled with me all over the world so it was probably exposed to some shock or something during the travel.

Now I need to find appropriate packaging to ship the drive to Segate and wait for them to ship me a new drive… 🙁 Ah well… Not a lot I can do about it.

6th Year of people suffering through my rants/posts starts

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:59 PM

Wow… Its October 2nd already and that makes it 6 years since I made the first post on this blog. When I started off I was posting one post a day atleast, and on some days I even made multiple posts a day. Over time things got a bit hectic and I got a bit lazy so the frequency went down to a couple of times a week and now is down to once or twice a month.

I have decided to increase the frequency again to at least a post a week. Once that is a regular occurrence I will increase the frequency to twice or thrice a week.

In anycase here are some stats on the blog:

Total posts: 748
Total Comments: 431
Busiest day: Jan 7th 2010 (I lost all my stats for 2008-2009 when the service I used to track the stats went down)

I will see if I can extract more stats from my http logs but that pretty much depends on how many of the old logs I have on the server and how long it will take me to extract the stats from them. So don’t hold your breath.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.
