Mp3Realm: A new Mp3 Search engine

Filed under: Interesting Sites — Suramya @ 5:24 PM

I have blogged about multimedia search engines before but all the ones I have used so far are slow/cluttered and don’t give very accurate results. Another issue was that a lot of the songs that it returned were not mp3’s instead they would be wav/ra/wmv etc.

I just found this new search engine called: Mp3Realm which addresses these issues. It only indexes mp3’s, the interface is minimal (something like Google) and it returns relevant results. In all a pretty good engine. Lets see how long it can stay up.

Satnav causes ambulance to drive 200 miles out of the way

This demonstrates how dependent we are on computers and how much we trust them… Basically

The crew — both new to the job — meant to go 12 miles to a specialist unit in Brentford, ESSEX, from King George’s Hospital in Ilford.

But instead of a 30-minute journey they ended up driving for four hours to Brentwood, MANCHESTER.
Instead of driving the eight miles from King George’s Hospital in Ilford, East London, to the mental health unit of Mascalls Park Hospital in Brentwood, Essex, the pair found themselves 200 miles off-track on the outskirts of Manchester before they realised their blunder and turned back.

The sat-nav with a mind of its own has undergone reorientation while the ambulancemen have been told to undertake a geography lesson and learn to think for themselves.

They drove for eight hours before finally delivering the patient. After the equipment sent them north, they covered 215 miles in about four hours. The way back was only slightly shorter and took more than 3½ hours.

In the old days they would have called and asked the dispatcher or someone for directions but the computer is always right correct? so they trusted it and ended up 200 miles off course.

Allowing users to unlock cellphones supports terrorism.

Yes, you read that correctly. Atleast thats what TracFone is arguing in court right now. Are they really that stupid? I mean come on, some people have used terrorism to scare people into giving up a lot of things but this one takes the cake.

Pre-paid cell phone company TracFone is arguing in court that allowing people to unlock their cell phones and use them with competing carriers will support terrorism.

This is getting beyond ridiculous. They should be fined for making such a stupid claim and wasting people’s time. There are a lot of reasons why people might want to unlock their phone and none of them support terrorism. Here are a couple:

* I want to use my phone in another country, I will have to unlock it before I can use it. (Yes had to get this done multiple times)

* Want to switch carriers. Oh you mean I should stick with a crappy service and pay more than I should if I want to use the phone I bought and like?

I am sure there are more but its late and I can’t think of any right now… Feel free to add any you might think of.

Send greetings using Google maps

Filed under: Interesting Sites — Suramya @ 3:17 AM

This is a really cool implementation of Google maps. Since a lot of buildings in the world look like letters it is possible to create a message using these buildings. So Jesse Vig went ahead and created geoGreeting.com. Its a cool implementation and I love it.

Check out this message I created as a test and then try it yourself

Proof that you really can find anything on eBay

Filed under: Funny News,Interesting Sites — Suramya @ 8:17 PM

Ok, now I know you can buy anything on eBay.

Earlier I spoke about paying a company so that ‘cool’/pretty people leave messages on your myspace page so that you look more popular than you are. Then Michelle pointed out that you can pay another company that calls you on your cell so that you sound more popular than you are.

Now I just found this auction on eBay where this girl is promising to be the winner’s MySpace girlfriend for a month.

Do people really care so much about looking cool/popular? Are they really that shallow?

My Birthday celebrations

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:59 PM

As some of you already know my birthday was on the 3rd of Dec and this time I had a lot of fun celebrating it. Since Aarti’s birthday is on the 2nd we decided to have a joint party on the 2nd evening so that we could celebrate her birthday on the 2nd and the celebrate my birthday at midnight.

We (Reema, Pranav, Sarang and me) arrived there at Aarti’s place at about 8:15 pm and we were one of the first to arrive, we were soon followed by Amit and Anu, so they decided to pass the time by playing Uno (I was busy eating…as I was starving). Then we remembered that Amit and Anu had gotten cake so Aarti cut it. It was a really good cake (I think it was called the banana split cake or something like that…) Below is a pic of Aarti cutting the cake:

After the rest of the group joined us slowly we started the party with food, followed with shots:

then dancing. (A lot of dancing… We started at about 9 pm and went on till almost 3 am or maybe a bit later… not to clear on that part) Below are some photos taken at that time.

At 12 am both me and Aarti cut another cake this time to celebrate my birthday. The cake cutting was followed by a lot more dancing, singing and basically us enjoying ourselves.

Once most of us got tired we decided to leave and got home at around 4:30 am or so at which time we all went to sleep. Got up at 11 am and got ready as we had planned to go for lunch in the city. Because everyone had a late night we decided to postpone the lunch till 2 pm, but by the time we got seated and everyone ordered it was already 3 pm. We went to this mexican restaurant called La Palapa located in the east village. We were seated in this heated room with a glass ceiling. The food was awesome and the service was great.

After lunch we went to this desert place but since all of us had already eaten so much only Vinit and Surabhi ordered anything (They both got hot chocolate). Then we came home where we relaxed and watched a bit of TV (Saw the first two episodes of Sliders).

As usual I took a lot of photos (143 on my camera, plus photos on Aarti’s and Madhur’s camera’s) and will be sharing them soon. Actually Aatri posted the photos from her camera online, you can check them out over here

This birthday was a lot of fun so a big thank you to all my friends who showed up and even bigger thanks to everyone who called/emailed/messaged me to wish me.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

My trip to Lake Placid

As some of you might know I took a four day trip with friends to Lake Placid, NY and I just got back. This was one fo the most fun trips I have taken in a while. Lake Placid is an awesome location with great Ski trails (They held the winter there in 1932 and 1980). I have been there earlier and loved it so we decided to take another trip there.

There were 10 of us on this trip: Me, Vinit, Surabhi, Pranav, Aarti, Sarang, Sandeep, Pradeep, Amit and Anu. All of us except Amit and Anu left from Newark, NJ (We had to leave the cars in the NJIT parking deck) at 4:30 am (so that we could miss all the traffic) in two cars. It was me, Sandeep, Pradeep and Sarang in one car and Surabhi, Vinit, Aarti and Pranav in the second car. The drive up there is beautiful and we were there in Lake Placid by 9:15 am. The cabin was really nice, it was located right next to the Ausable River and was really beautiful. Below is a pic of the cabin from the front.

Cabin.jpg
Front View of the cabin we stayed at

We basically lazed around during the day. The cabin had a fireplace so we relaxed in front of it; played Uno, Vollyball and Climbed trees (That was just me) and slept (Some of us hadn’t slept the entire night before).

FirePlace.jpg
Enjoying the Fireplace

At night we had a bonfire and we fried Paneer (Cottage Cheese) and onions at the bonfire and had them. They tasted amazing. It was freezing outside and till we got the fire going it was literally a pain to stay outside inspite of all the jackets and gloves. But once we got the fire going the temperature became a lot more bearable. We were outside for a couple of hours atleast. The best part was that the bonfire area was near the river so if everyone stopped talking we could hear the river flowing and nothing else. There was absolute silence in the area. The night sky has never looked so awesome before.

Once the food was done we came back in and started talking about various horror movies we had seen, basically to scare Aarti, Vinit and Surabhi. We talked for a couple of hours and just as we were about to goto sleep Amit and Anu arrived and we talked for another hour before finally going to sleep.

The next day was also very relaxed and we all woke up by 9:30 am. While we were getting dressed Anu made tea for everyone (I had a soda as I don’t drink tea) and we had breakfast. After breakfast we went outside for a couple of hours of cricket.

Then once everyone was tired we left for Lake Placid and on the way we stopped by the AuSable river which had frozen (Not completely but just the top inch or inch and half) to toss stones and ice across it. It was a lot of fun. The really interesting part was that when we tossed a particularly large stone or ice piece we would get a cool echo.

RiverStoneToss.jpg
Tossing Stones in the Ausable River

After playing at the river for about an hour we drove around to the Lake Placid proper, visited the Olympic stadium and had dinner at this Italian place. After dinner we went back to the cabin and watched a couple of movies. Actually I just watched half of the first one when I got bored and left to read a book. After the first movie we decided to make another bonfire and roasted/grilled corn on it along with Yams. The corn tasted awesome but the Yams were ok. I think we shouldn’t have let them catch fire. That probably ruined the flavor. 😉 Aarti, Surabhi and Sandeep stayed inside while we were out by the bonfire. After eating we put out the fire and went back in and spent the next few hours just talking. We talked about everything from politics to cars to college life. We finally went to sleep at 4 am and that too because we were planning to go ice skating and had to get up for that.

DinnerItalian.jpg

We were originally planning on going skiing but since it hadn’t snowed yet none of the beginner trails were open yet and only the intermediate trails were open. So we went ice-skating. That also was a lot of fun. The rink was only open for 2 hours but we enjoyed ourselves a lot. After skating we went for lunch at a Mexican restaurant where the food was pretty good and the service was amazing.

After dinner we came back to the cabin as we had a few hours to kill before we went to the Stars on Ice show and just relaxed. I didn’t goto the show as my head was killing me but everyone else except Sarang went and really enjoyed the show. I basically finished my book and then went to sleep. Got up the next day feeling a lot better and had breakfast. Then after lazing around for a few hours while everyone got dressed we reluctantly left for home.

GroupPhoto.jpg

I was in Amit’s car with him and Anu and the drive back was non eventful, we did hit a lot of traffic at first but since we had a GPS and my black berry we choose an alternative route and managed to avoid most of the traffic.

Over all the trip was a lot of fun and I took a lot of photos (About 500+) so it will take me some time to sort through them and select pics to put in the photo gallery. However I have put up a zip file containing all the Lake Placid photos up on the web, you can download it from here.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Update (5th Dec 2006): Posted the pics from the trip in the Photogallery
