Trip To Hongkong: Day 1

Hey everyone. After a long time I have taken some time off and traveled to Hong Kong for a week long vacation. I will be here till the 4th of Jan.

The trip started off on the 27th with my departure for the Airport at 6:15pm for a 10:15 pm flight. The traffic was bad as usual so it took us almost one hour to get to the airport. Once I got there I found out that the checkin for my flight hadn’t started yet but the guy at the counter was nice enough to check me in. Then I wanted to convert some currency to Hongkong dollars so that when I get to HK I could use the facilities and purchase items if required but I was told that they didn’t have any HK dollars so I ended up buying US dollars.

The flight departed on time but overall the experience was bad. It wasn’t the worst flight I have flown but it was up there in the top three.

It arrived in HK on time and I got to convert my money to HK dollars without issues. I didn’t have the address or directions to get to Sakshi’s place (I am staying at their place) so I had to call them up to get the address and directions. Sakshi was nice enough to come pick me up from the station after I took the airport express to the HK city.

Once we got home we talked for a while and then relaxed for a couple of hours, had breakfast and basically just chilled. At 3 pm we left to visit the casino’s in Macao. The trip to Macao was nice. We took a ferry to the place and the one hour journey are very comfortable. Initially the sea was a bit choppy but later on the ride was very smooth.

Over there we went to the Venetian which is this huge Casino. Inside the Casino they had a show of “Zaia” which is a dream of a young girl who journeys into space on a strange, yet familiar voyage of self-discovery. As she travels, she encounters the beauty of humanity and eventually brings it back with her to share with the inhabitants of earth. So me, Vinit and Surabhi went for it.

Basically the story is not the important part, infact while I was watching it I had no idea of what the story was. Its an amazing display of acrobatics/performances. Think of a circus in a musical setting.

It was a great experience and we all enjoyed it a lot. After the show all of us along with Sakshi and Manjesh spent a few hours at the casino playing Blackjack. (Actually they all played while I watched as I am not that big a fan of casino’s/gambling)

We then took the ferry back to HK and got back home. Had a late snack of Maggi noodles and everyone crashed. (I will do so once I finish this entry).

Tomorrow is going to be a fun/busy day. Planning on roaming around the city. Should be fun.

Well this is all for now. Will write more tomorrow (Hopefully)

Userfulness of school activities in work

This is so true. The same holds for college studies. Most of what I find useful at work is stuff I learnt myself…

Life update

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 6:58 PM

I was planning on making a separate for all the stuff/trips I have made since the 5th but it doesn’t look like its going to happen soon. So instead of waiting to post a detailed description here’s a brief summary:

1. 5th Dec: Went to Nagpur for Nirmit’s wedding with KM and Yayati. It was a fun trip, we took the train down so it was a 17 hour journey one way. On the way to Nagpur a project was going live so we had an interesting time working from the train. Stayed their over the weekend and then got back on Monday.

2. 10th Dec: Attended Chavi’s wedding. Got home late at night, grabbed a couple of hours of sleep then me, Vinit and Surabhi drove to Goon for the wedding. The wedding was pretty late at night (the phera’s started at 1am) and since I had to be back at work the next day I went off to sleep during the phera’s. Started back home at 5am and got there at about 6.

So there you have it a brief update. There was other stuff that happened but not feeling like typing it all out..

My Birthday

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:19 PM

This years birthday was fun. I was at work till 1:30 am (my usual time) and then I drove home. Once I got there I tried to open the door but it was locked from inside so I rang the bell. Axu opened the door and I went to the room and threw my jacket and laptop bag on the bed. Then I turned around and switched on the lights and Mom, dad, Jeeto Mausi, Richa & Axu were standing there for a surprise party.

They had decorated the room with balloons and got cake. Thankfully the jacket I threw on the bed missed the cake by a few inches. We cut the cake and Richa, got me a really nice shirt and a great card.

After having the cake and taking some photos we all went to sleep. The rest of the day wasn’t very eventful as it was a weekday and I had a project delivery coming up.

Have an outing planed the end of the month instead. Lets see how that works out.

Recharge Batteries using wind power

Filed under: Tech Related — Suramya @ 11:55 PM

I want one… This is such a cool idea. One way to recharge would be to put the battery in the charger and stick it on the windshield of a car when you are driving somewhere so that by the time you reach your destination your batteries are all charged and ready to use.

How many books do I read per year/I have read so far?

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:24 PM

A while ago someone asked me: “How many books do you read till now?” and my answer was: a lot. So last year I decided to start counting the no of books I read by keeping a list of all the books I read starting on 26th Nov 2007.

Now one year later the book count is: 304 books read. (This doesn’t include the books that I started to read and then stopped. Though there aren’t a lot of them). I wanted to cross 365 but… I guess that’s a goal for next year.

If I wanted to calculate the aprox no of books I have read so far, I can do it. I started reading novels in 4th class and by the 5th I was going through the school library and the local library like crazy. Lets say that the year I started reading was 1991. That means that I have been reading for aprox 17 years. (Its a bit more but lets use this as the start because that was when I started reading regularly)

17*304 =5408

Its very likely that I have read more books than that because there have been months where I have read multiple books each day. (These were mostly during the school vacations.)

Thought I should share that with you… How many books do you read each year?

My Week/Weekend

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:56 PM

This week was interesting. Had a couple of deliveries at work (software. Not pregnancy related) so had to put in some long hours. The projects I am working on are really interesting and I am having a lot of fun. For obvious reasons I won’t be talking about the specifics of the projects but they are fun 🙂

Over the weekend I watched a lot of movies. Some were good, a few I didn’t like that much. Quantum of Solace is a movie that falls into the second category. It felt like the movie had a lot of plot holes and it didn’t feel like a bond movie. The title song was really good and some of the fight scenes were decent but it wasn’t up to the usual bond movie mark esp. Casino Royale.

In addition I also saw the following:

1. Death Race: Loved the movie. Its a total switch your brain off action movie with lots of explosions/crashes and I loved it.

2. Mostly Ghostly” Its a kids movie by the Author of the Goosebumps series (R. L. Stine) about this kid who is trying to perfect a magic act and finds a piece of paper that has a catchy rhyme so he starts using it as a chant for his show. What he didn’t know was this chant was part of an actual magic incantation. He then meets the ghosts of two kids who help him wth his show in return of his help in getting rid of an evil ghoul.

3. Madagascar Escape 2 Africa: Its a good movie. A fun watch.

Other than this the week was pretty uneventful. Busy but uneventful.

Fix Unresponsive or Frozen Linux Computers

If you are ever stuck on a Linux system that is completely unresponsive try the following key combination to get access back:

Alt PrintScreen r s e i u b.

When you type the command the system executes the following commands:

* r – takes the control of the keyboard back from X.
* s – writes the data from the disc cache to the hard disk.
* e – sends SIGTERM to all processes except init.
* i – sends SIGKILL to all processes except init
* u – remounts all the filesystems readonly (basically a measure to help you reboot safely)
* b – reboots the system

Please keep in mind that this is a last ditch method, that is to be used only when everything else has failed to get you access to the system. Normally you should be able to switch to a virtual terminal (F1-F6) and kill the offending application.
