Demotivators strike again…

Filed under: Interesting Sites — Suramya @ 10:20 PM

Despair.com’s infamous Demotivators turn motivational posters on their heads, reminding you just how little you matter to the executive-class overlords.

Check them out… I personally like most of them, but this one stands out as a classic:

Church Lego Version

Filed under: Interesting Sites — Suramya @ 6:02 PM

Now this is something you don’t see every day… It must have taken a lot of dedication and hardwork to make this. Its impressive

The “Abston Church of Christ” is a Lego project built by Amy Hughes, a computer programmer who enjoys doing Lego projects. She says she once wanted to be an architect.
“Abston” is a fictional city whose name is drawn from the type of plastic used to Make Lego pieces (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene).

The church has hundreds of tiny Lego people sitting in it including a front row of custom selected Legos that represent real people who “attended” the dedication.

Painting directional signs outside subway stop in NYC

Filed under: Interesting Sites — Suramya @ 5:21 PM

Anyone who has been to NYC knows thats its easy to get confused which direction is which when travelling via the Subway system, its ok during the day (When you can look at the sun and figure out which way is east… unless its noon… then you are SOL)

Someone decided to actually do something about this and painted directional signs outside some of the subway entrances… Really good work. Unfortunately the person didn’t sign the sign so we don’t know who to thank…

Here’s an example:

Scrolling LED bra sends mixed messages

Filed under: Funny News,Interesting Sites — Suramya @ 4:18 PM

Found this while browsing through Cnet (Honest!)… And I think this is really funny:

“After years of reminding blokes that ‘our eyes are up here,’ someone’s gone and invented a bra that seems to say “but my breasts are down here,'” wrote the blog’s Star C. Foster.

Only downside in getting this is that its about $500 a piece… I think getting a new iPod would be cheaper and more useful.

Geekcorps: A Peace Corps for techies

Filed under: Interesting Sites,My Thoughts — Suramya @ 12:56 PM

This is another volunteer outfit that can essentially be thought of as a Peace Corps with a focus on PCs. The organization recruits technical experts to conceive ideas for integrating technology into local economies in a self-sustaining way.

This is extremely interesting, they pay you (airfare, accommodation, insurance and a monthly living stipend) to goto places like Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Romania), Central Asia (Armenia, Kyrgystan), Northeast Asia (Mongolia), Southeast Asia (Thailand), Sub-Saharan Africa (Ghana, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Mali) and the Middle East (Lebanon, Jordan).

I will be taking part in this sometime next year as this year I have pre-existing obligations. The average tour is 4 months.

Free Geek: Helping the needy get nerdy

Filed under: Interesting Sites,Linux/Unix Related,My Thoughts,Tech Related — Suramya @ 4:43 PM

This is a really good program that combines volunteer work with computer education with helping underprivilidged get computer access.

Free Geek volunteers are a part of one of two programs, the Adoption Program or the Build Program. The Adoption Program gives each person, after 24 hours of volunteer service, a FreekBox, consisting of a rebuilt computer running Linux, as well as basic software, a monitor, keyboard, mouse, one year of tech support and classes on how to use it all. For the Build Program, which takes about 100 hours, volunteers build five computers and get to keep the sixth one, leaning more towards an educational focus.

They also have a couple of other projects you can help with. Check out How to Volunteer for details.

Unfortunately most of the projects require you to be in the Portland, OR area which kind of sucks as I would have loved to help out with this project. Luckily they do have a Coder section that lets people who are located remotely help out with the project. I am joining this mailing list as a volunteer, lets see how much fun/interesting its going to be. I will keep you posted.

Show Synopsis:

The high-rise towers of Reynholm Industries are full of go-getters, success stories, and winners… apart from in the basement.

While their beautiful colleagues work in fantastic surroundings, Jen, Roy and Moss lurk below ground, scorned and mocked by their co-workers as geeky losers, doomed never to make it back into normal society
—–

Episode 1 (Yesterday’s Jam) Story line:

In a cluttered basement deep in the bowels of Reynholm Industries lurk Roy and Moss, the I.T. Department. Reviled and mocked by cooler colleagues, their world of servers and firewalls is rudely interrupted by the arrival of Jen, a new “Relationship Manager” who knows as much about computers as a yak.
She doesn’t want to work in a dingy basement, and they don’t want a manager who doesn’t understand BASIC let alone binary, but they discover sometimes there are benefits to having a woman about the place…
