Random Thoughts

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 11:10 PM

This is going to be a completely random posting of various thoughts/idea’s as I have a cold and can’t think straight:

* All sites should have an RSS feed, or some API that allows you to pull data off them for building on top of them. Was trying to get release dates for some of my favorite author’s works and found out that most sites with this info don’t have feeds that I can subscribe to.

* You know you are old, when you are talking to someone about a TV series that you watched as a kid and they tell you that they weren’t even born when the show was running. This happened to me a couple of days ago at work while talking to a few of my juniors.

* Moving webhosting requires way too much thought. Or I guess I am just weird that way. Going to move the site to a new hosting provider around the middle of this month. Still debating if I want to move the domain hosting as well or not.

* Wonder if there are any online grocery shopping places in Bangalore?

* New year resolution: Will be more in touch with friends this year.

That’s it. Can’t think more, so going to crash. Will write more later.

Working without Free diskspace in Linux

On linux machines you can fill your root partition to 100% utilization and the system would still continue to function giving you a chance to free up space without downtime, but on Windows machines the same is not possible and if you have managed to fill your C:\ to 100% then the system will go down (Know this for sure for Windows versions up to Vista, not sure about Win7) hard. This is something that has puzzled me a lot over the years but didn’t know how it worked, but now I finally have an explanation:

When you format a partition in Linux , 5% of the total space gets reserved for privileged processes, by default. This is done so that system processes continue to function correctly ,if the filesystem gets full. This is useful for your ‘root’ partition.

The really interesting part is that you can configure this to reduce the percentage of the reserved space using the tune2fs command. e.g. if you wanted to reduce the reserved space for /dev/sda1 to 1% of the total space then issue the following command as root:

tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sda1

Referrals as a business model

Filed under: My Thoughts — Suramya @ 8:49 PM

Most companies have a referral program where employes can refer their acquaintances for positions in the company. The idea behind the program is simple, smart people have smart friends and you have a higher chance of finding a qualified person through a referral than a cold interview.

I got the following email today which turns the entire concept on its head and tries to convince you to game the system:

As a qualified professional in a reputed firm you are probably on the lookout for good candidates to refer. I’d like to introduce Round One – an innovative new platform that connects you to job seekers so you can refer those you choose:

Once you sign up you can:

  • Receive profiles of candidates interested in your company via email, who you can unofficially interview over the phone
  • Earn incentives from Round One for each candidate you speak with
  • Refer candidates you choose, via your firms referral program and earn your company’s referral bonus

The third point makes is really clear what their selling point is: make money by referring candidates to your company. But instead of referring people you personally know are qualified for the position, you will be referring people you have talked to a couple of times on the phone and have know idea about. In essence you are acting like a head hunter but instead of being upfront about it you are gaming the company.

I am sure that this practice would be discouraged in most companies and if a person is caught doing this they would face some action. Actually I would hope that this would be the case because this offer is dishonest and sneaky. If you really want to spend time headhunting you should start/join a headhunter company.

What do you folks think? Is this a smart idea, or just underhandedness and not something to be encouraged?

Yucky Slime may be what is needed to make the next breakthrough in Biocomputing

Filed under: Computer Related — Suramya @ 11:05 PM

According to Toshiyuki Nakagaki, a professor at Future University Hakodate the lowly slime mold that most of us associate with gym showers and broke college students may be what helps us make the next major breakthrough in Biotechnology and computer algorithms.

Basically, Physarum polycephalum, or grape-cluster slime which looks like mayonnaise when looked at without a microscope has the ability to organize its cells to create the most direct root through a maze to a source of food. During experiments the research team successfully managed to get the molds to form the pattern of a railway system quite similar to the railroad networks of the Kanto region centering Tokyo. If this can be harnessed then we can use the networks in future designs of transport systems. The best part is that the networks created are resistant to unexpected stimulus so if used in real world applications that would make them resilient and fault tolerant.

He says slime molds can create much more effective networks than even the most advanced technology that currently exists.

“Computers are not so good at analysing the best routes that connect many base points because the volume of calculations becomes too large for them,” Tero explained.

“But slime molds, without calculating all the possible options, can flow over areas in an impromptu manner and gradually find the best routes.

“Slime molds that have survived for hundreds of millions of years can flexibly adjust themselves to a change of the environment,” he said. “They can even create networks that are resistant to unexpected stimulus.”

Research has shown slime molds become inactive when subjected to stress such as temperature or humidity changes. They even appear to “remember” the stresses and protectively become inactive when they might expect to experience them.

Sir Isaac Newton’s scanned notes are published online by Cambridge

Following in the footsteps of The Royal Society, Cambridge University has digitized and made available online; the notebooks in which Sir Isaac Newton worked out his theories that are the basis of most of the classical science.

Included in the collection are Newton’s own copy of his 1687 masterwork, Philosophiæ naturalis principia mathematica, in which he described with mathematical rigor his laws of motion and gravitation. The digitized version also includes Newton’s own edits and marginalia, plus many pages of handwritten notes.

Also included are some early papers; a notebook Newton inherited from his stepfather known as the Waste Book, in which he wrote down some of his work on developing calculus; a pair of college notebooks; and a raft of papers on Hydrostatics, Optics, Sound and Heat.

Looks like people are finally realizing that sharing information is good. Looking forward to seeing more such items being shared. Way to go Cambridge!

You can browse the archive at the Cambridge Digital Library.

Call for Star Wars & Star Trek fans to unite against a common threat: Twilight

Filed under: Humor — Suramya @ 3:08 PM

George Takei, best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek has issued a video statement on YouTube to broker a “star peace” between the two famous franchises so that they can focus on a common threat: Twilight. I don’t usually share videos on my blog but I had to share this one as I am a fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek, plus I really don’t like Twilight. 🙂

According to Takei, the sparkly vampire franchise is “really, really bad,” and lacks heroism and epic battle. He also claims that the only lesson to be learned from Twilight is “does my boyfriend like me?”

Watch the video on YouTube and then go spread the word 🙂

Thinking about changing Hosting providers. Any suggestions?

Filed under: Computer Related,Tech Related — Suramya @ 10:57 PM

I have been using 1and1.com as my hosting provider for a while now (since 2005) and have been happy with the service for the most par, however after their recent pricing change the service is getting to be a bit more expensive than I am comfortable with so I am thinking about changing webhosting providers. What hosting providers do you use and would recommend? I need the following feature sets in the service:

  • PHP4/5
  • MySQL DB: Fairly large no of databases with large storage allocations
  • Full SSH Shell Access
  • Unlimited Bandwidth (Have gotten bit by this a few times)
  • Email Accounts: A fairly high no with large quota’s (I never delete mails)
  • Perl Support
  • Multiple Domains allowed
  • High availability/uptime

Thanks in advance.

Harry Potter and yoga are evil according to the Catholic Church exorcist

Filed under: My Thoughts — Suramya @ 7:16 PM

Yes. You read that correctly, Catholic Church’s exorcist thinks that yoga and Harry potter are evil. I could understand if we were talking about Twilight :p 😉 but yoga? Seriously? Yoga has nothing to do with religion, it is a means to attain of a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. Now this insight can be a belief in Christianity, Hinduism, Islam or just a way to calm yourself after a stressful day and get a toned body while you are at it. In certain religions yoga does have a big significance but that doesn’t make it evil. Just as anything that doesn’t fall under your narrow definition of good doesn’t make it evil.

Father Gabriele Amorth, who for years was the Vatican’s chief exorcist and claims to have cleansed hundreds of people of evil spirits, said yoga is Satanic because it leads to a worship of Hinduism and “all eastern religions are based on a false belief in reincarnation”.

Coming to Harry potter being evil, I find that even more silly than people believing that Yoga is evil. If your people can’t understand the difference between fantasy and reality then I am sorry but you have bigger problems to worry about. The books, even though they have magic are about how you can win against all odds if you have the determination and strength to persevere.

I am not a very religious person, if you are a religious person good for you. I don’t use religion to figure out what/who to like or what to ‘hate’, I make my own choices. If that makes me a sinner in your eyes that’s your problem not mine. We are like blind men trying to describe an elephant, and each one insisting that they have the only correct interpretation. Found this image a couple of days ago on the web and had to go find it again for this post as I find it apt.

Finally I would like to end this post with a quote “I don’t fear God, I fear those who claim to speak on his behalf”.

This is all for now. Will post more later.

Happy Birthday dear Doctor

Filed under: My Thoughts — Suramya @ 1:14 PM

The famed science fiction series on BBC Doctor Who, celebrates its birthday today. It was 48 years ago we were introduced to the crazy loveable time traveling Doctor and his TARDIS.

I have been a fan of doctor who since the early 90’s when I read the novelizations of the series by Target. Then I went to the US and there managed to find the episodes themselves and was hooked. Now Dr Who is back on BBC and I make sure I don’t miss a single episode. The best part was when my mom saw my collection of Dr who books and told me that she used to watch the show and read the books when she was in college. Talk about a time loop.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. You will love it. Don’t start at the very beginning as you ‘might’ not like it that much initially, my suggestion is that you start with the 2005 reboot of the show and then once you are hooked start watching the previous seasons.
