New Knowledge @Suramya.com Blog started

Filed under: Website Updates — Suramya @ 12:29 AM

Started keeping a new blog called Knowledge @Suramya.com. This blog will be a place for me to store all the interesting things/tips/resources I find and think are useful. It will contain everything from links to interesting articles to computer definitions to tutorials.

Since I am very interested in computer security there are links here to software/tutorials that explain how to test computer security. These are for informational purposes only and if you decide to use them to break into a system that you don’t own then you are doing it at your own risk, if you get into trouble don’t blame me.

Originally all this info was supposed to be in a KnowledgeBase but I didn’t find any KB software which I liked so I decided to keep a Blog instead.

Check it out and let me know what you think of it.

Computer Down so Collage Generator is down

Filed under: Software Releases,Website Updates — Suramya @ 5:52 AM

During a routine distribution update (apt-get dist-upgrade) of StarKnight (My primary workstation) something went wrong and KDE disappeared from my system. I tried reinstalling it but it still didn’t fix it. Then I played some more with the system and managed to mess it up even more. (I started getting segfaults when I try to install stuff and programs started giving wierd errors). So I am in the process of re-installing Debian on my computer and till thats done I am stuck using a windows machine. 🙁

Now since StarKnight is down the Collage Generation page is also down as the backend processing for it was being done on StarKnight. I am hoping that I should have it back up and running by tomorrow but lets see how that works out. I will keep you posted.

Wrote a guide on How to compile and Install GIMPShop

One of the most common complains that most graphics artists have when they try switching to GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation program) is that the user interface for GIMP is clunky and is hard to use. I have faced the same problem but over time I got used to the GIMP interface so didn’t do anything about it.

On the other hand Scott Moschella; actually decided to do something about it and spent a lot of time hacking the GIMP source to create GIMPShop where the tools, options, windows, and menus closely resemble Adobe Photoshop’s menu structure and naming conventions. This modification makes it really easy for Adobe Photoshop users to switch to GIMP threreby saving a lot of money.

He initially created GIMPShop for the Mac OS and the original package with a Mac Installer is available here;. He also made his ;modified source available so that others can port it to different OS’s. I downloaded it to my computer and got it to work on my Debian Linux machine.

Check out my Guide on How to compile and Install GIMPShop; and let me know what you think.

Suramya’s Collage Generator Ver 0.1 released

Filed under: Software Releases,Website Updates — Suramya @ 7:37 AM

Released Ver 0.1 of Suramya’s Collage Generator in the scripts section. This software creates a collage using images located using the Yahoo Image search based on your search terms.

The script was written in Perl and uses a modified version of webcollage to generate the collage. The current version is kind of slow (It takes about 45-60 secs to generate the collage) but I am working on improving that. The biggest delay is in downloading the images from the web and haven’t figured out to reduce that yet. I am also hacking the webcollage script further to reduce the collage generation time.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Suramya

Update 3:40 am:

The server is really busy right now so the script times out before it generates the entire collage. I will fix it tomorrow… today… you know what I mean. Might move it to a different server to speed it up. Will keep you posted.

Update: 23rd March:

Moved the server component to my home computer which is a lot faster than the webserver. This speeds up the collage creation but its still pretty slow. Secondly the script seems to have problems with multiple word searches, I am trying to figure out why and how to fix it. If you have any idea’s let me know. I might convert this script to use google API’s instead of yahoo to make it more accurate. Lets see….

Upgraded the Blog Software

Filed under: Website Updates — Suramya @ 4:30 AM

Upgraded the Serendipity Suite to the latest version. I don’t think there were any problems during installation nor were there any problems in converting the old data to the new format.

However I may be wrong so let me know if you encounter any bugs.

Website to move to a new host.

Filed under: Website Updates — Suramya @ 4:24 AM

I will be moving the site to a new hosting service sometime this week. (As soon as I get access to the new server). While I don’t think that the site would have any downtime, accidents may happen. So if the site goes down over the next few days its ’cause I am moving to a new server.

I will keep you posted on this.

After a long time I have posted a new article on Computer Usability Vs Security. In this article I try to figure out if Computer Security and Computer Usability are two opposite directions in computer systems. Check it out and let me know what you think about it.
