No I am not dead (Yet…)

Filed under: My Life,Website Updates — Suramya @ 4:38 AM

No I am not dead. I know I said that I would post more updates soon but didn’t.

There were two problems preventing me from posting. First: I was sick with a bad cold and a sore throat from hell. The cold made my eyes water a lot which made working on the computer pretty hard. (You can imagine how much I enjoyed that…). When I finally started getting better I found that the server hosting suramya.com was having problems. This was the same server which has been having problems all this year and this time I think the RAM and HDD both were failing. To make things interesting mysql kept segfaulting on certain queries, perl segfaulted everytime you ran it. apache refused to run for a long time.

So I built a new machine to replace this one. To make things fun, the cpu fan died on the first system I built. Since I had another spare system available I rebuilt the distro on the second one, but guess what the cpu fan on the second one also died. By this time I was pretty mad so I dissected another computer and put the fan from that one in the new one. Then the machine actually worked.

So After making a mirror of suramya.com on the new server I had to drive to the NY office to replace the old server with the new one. I finally did this about 2 hours ago so as of now suramya.com is back up completely. I did do some work on the new feedback script so expect to see some changes by the end of the week.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later. Thanks for visiting.

My Birthday updates

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 3:02 AM

First of all a big thanks to everyone who emailed/sms’d/called/IMed me to wish me on the 3rd. I am not ignoring you, I fell sick on the 3rd and am still feeling pretty down 🙁 I will most prob reply to all the emails today, latest by tomorrow.

For my birthday we went to Macaroni Grill for dinner. The food was awesome. We were then supposed to goto a club but since I was sick we decided to postpone that to the next weekend.

I got an Ipod Mini as a birthday gift. Now I can finally get rid of my Rio-600 with its 32 mb of RAM. 32 MB – 4GB, now thats what I call an upgrade. 🙂

Now its time for me to crawl back into bed. More updates later.

Finally became a full Network admin

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 3:24 AM

Today I finally graduated as a full fledged Network Administrator: I got to crawl through the opehead tiles and run a cable from the network closet to the office. I spent a wonderfull 2 hours getting dust in my hair, jacket, eyes, clothes etc. But on a more positive note, We finally have a business DSL line in the office. This allows me to access the internet using the DSL while the CNG internet only supports the tunnels to the NY office and csr sites.

The DSL is a lot more stable than the T1, I was getting a sustained download of 500 kbs and wasn’t getting kicked off every few mins from my home system due to dropped packets. We might upgrade it to a 1.5 mbps line and run VOIP lines in to the office… lets see how that works out.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Interesting day

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 1:14 AM

Interesting day…

Woke up at 6 am to drop Vivek at the EWR Airport so that he could pick up his rental car and drive to DC
Unfortunately for him Hertz has a wierd policy in the NY area regarding age limits, you have to be over 25 to rent a car in the NY area. Since Vivek is under 25 he couldn’t get the car, so we ended up driving to Avis which was also overbooked and had no cars available. Luckily the guy spoke to the manager at LaGuardia airport and reserved a car for him there. Then I dropped of Vivek at the path station and came home and crashed.

Woke up around 12:30 to get ready to goto a lunch/dinner party at Renny’s place. The weather was horrible so it took us a while to get there but it was worth it. We cooked pav-bhaji for dinner with me chopping all the onions and most of the vegetables. (It was either that or cook…) Vinit helped Renny in making the bhaji while Surabhi and Bina prepared the Pav (Buttered Bread). After we all finished eating, during which all of us overate (at least I did) we talked for a while and then split as they had to goto Renny’s sister’s place.

Finally we got home and lazed around for the rest of the day.

Watched National treasure

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 9:17 AM

After spending all day at home relaxing for a change, I went to watch ‘National Treasure’ with friends. The original plan was to go for the 11:15 pm show. But since we got delayed while picking up Reema from her place and then driving to the theater we had to change the tickets to the 12:10 am show.

It was a decent movie, worth watching once but not that impressive. Everyone else (Surabhi, Vinit, Reema, Amit and Sanketh) really liked the move though. If you like treasure hunt movies you will probably like the movie.

Weekend was fun

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 6:42 AM

This weekend was fun. Ruth and Chetan came over from DC for Diwali.

On Saturday we roamed all over ChinaTown taking pics for Ruth’s Photo feature. Then we went to watch a Hindi Movie Veer-Zhara (This part wasn’t that much fun). Finally we went to Reema’s place for dinner. Her mom is an awesome cook and I think we all overate. 🙂

Sunday we again spent in NY (Chinatown + little Itlay). Then ruth spent some time shopping, thankfully that wasn’t as long or as boring as I feared.

Overall a fun weekend. Took a lot of pics, will put them up soon.

Made another trip to Washington

Made another trip to Washington over the weekend.

Me and Vivek left at about 11:30 am and drove to washington in about 3 1/2 hours reaching there at 2:00 pm where we picked up Ruth and started on the drive back to her place so that she could cook Lunch for us.

Since she needed to borrow some utensiles we had to go by Liji’s house to pickup stuff. On the way we were also supposed to pickup Chetan from the trainstation. Inspite of being warned Ruth told Chetan that we would pick him up at around 3:00 pm and sure enough we got caught in traffic and then got lost and then got stuck in traffic again before we finally picked him up around 4:15 pm.

Since we were in a hurry we only spent 10 mins at Liji’s place and then drove to Ruth’s place. There we cooked food and surprisingly it actually turned out to be edible. And we finally had our lunch at around 6:30 pm. Then Ruth had to goto her Aunts place for Dinner so we drove her there and while she was enjoying dinner we picked up a movie from Blockbuster. After driving around for about an hour we pickedup Ruth and went back home. At this time Vinit and Surabhi had also joined us at her place.

Unfortunately her landlords were back at this time and were asleep so we couldn’t play foosball as we had planned so we took the TV and the VCR down to the basement so that we could watch movie. Since its a lot more fun to talk than to watch a movie we spent the next 3 hours talking and having fun. Then we started the movie but since it was 4 am and all of us were tired we stopped halfway through the movie and went to sleep.

Next day, Ruth woke us up at 8 am again so that we could go on a morning walk with her, as I have had the pleasure of this during my last trip I wisely declined and went back to sleep. Vivek wasn’t that lucky and got stuck with her. This time they only took 2 hours to get back. Then we got ready and left after dropping Ruth off at the Church as Vivek had to be back at work in the afternoon.

Overall it was a nice trip and I really enjoyed myself. We took a couple of photos and I will put them up sometime over the course of this week. (No really, I will….)

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 12:01 AM

You know you are getting old when your friends start getting engaged.

Got an email from an old friend Neelam, who got engaged last weekend. The marrige is sometime next year. Congrats Neelam! Hope you have a great life, I wish you and your Fiance all the best in your future.

Lets see if I can make it to the wedding or not. I would have posted the pic she sent me but somehow I don’t think she will like that.

Vivek’s Birthday

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 6:55 PM

Its Vivek’s birthday today so we took him out in NY for a drink at this place called Tonic.

It was a lot of fun. Unfortunately everyone other than me had to work today for some reason (Wierd people) so we didn’t stay out that late. Surprisingly all of us were pretty sober when we got back.

We also stopped by in a club near 14th and 7th Ave for a drink before we got home. Most of the people there were dressed for halloween. Some of the costumes were very nice. Took some pics, planning on putting them on the site. Don’t know when thats going to happen.

Vivek’s back at work. I am planning on spending the day reading or updating my site.:)

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.

Nothing special done

Filed under: My Life — Suramya @ 2:46 AM

Did nothing special over the weekend. Did a little programming for home.
Rest of the time, I slept, watched Seven Day’s and finished the third season of Voyager.

Also read a book: The hunt for Ircarus. It was a good book most of the way but the ending was stupid. It made no sense at all.

Well this is all for now. Will post more later.
