OpenProj: An alternative to Microsoft Project

Filed under: Computer Software,Knowledgebase,Tech Related — Suramya @ 10:51 AM

Do you use MS Project to schedule your projects but dislike the costs? Or perhaps you would like to use it but are discouraged by the >$1,000 price tag. Well, the open source community has just gotten a great replacement to MS Project called OpenProj from Projity.

OpenProj is a free, open source project management solution that is a complete replacement of Microsoft Project, and other commercial project solutions. OpenProj is ideal for desktop project management and is available on Linux, Unix, Mac or Windows even opening existing Microsoft or Primavera files.

Check it out if you are interested in saving some money.

PS: I haven’t tried it because I don’t need a project management solution yet. But when I do I know what to look for.

  1. I’m sure it’s an excellent product … but other than blatantly copying the features and UI of MS Project … and then making it free … what else does this product do new?

  2. Well for one it works on Linux, Mac and Windows.
Other than that I don’t know because I am not familiar with MS Project and have never used either of the programs before.

  3. What do you need all those fancy charts and reports for anyway? I have found that a simple tool is much more efficient for managing projects, but I guess that depends on your line of work. Plus there are many web-based tools so they work on any operating system. Check out OnStage, Basecamp, or activeCollab.

  4. I don’t need them or use them but the management types seem to love getting multicolored charts and reports so I guess thats why these tools are so popular.

Thanks for the list of alternative programs. They look interesting.

  8. Thanks for the suggestions.

I still don’t use MS Project or any variant so won’t be using this stuff personally but I think the visitors of the blog who do use these tools will find the links useful.
